Fans of the show point out that the writing team seems to hate Kelly Severide, putting him through one disaster after another.

Summary:

  • Kelly Severide has been on the show since season 1, but some fans think the writers treat him too harshly
  • The character has been through a lot of misery, facing disaster after disaster almost every season
  • The contrast is even more striking when compared to other major characters in the series

Chicago Fire has been around a long time at this point, with the show currently in its 12th season, and over the course of more than a decade, fans have witnessed all sorts of storylines unfold, both heartfelt and utterly tragic.

However, it seems that some characters have gotten a much more bitter share than the rest, as some fans point out that it feels like the show's writers absolutely hate Kelly Severide, portrayed by Taylor Kinney.

The Character Hasn't Had a Break Since Season 1

Severide has been a part of the show since its debut episode, which aired back in 2012, but he hasn't caught a break since then, facing one hardship after another almost every season.

First, he develops a drug addiction that nearly costs him his job, only saved by Leslie Shay providing a fake sample for testing.

Then, when she dies in the season 2 finale, it completely destroys Severide, leading him to spend a good part of season 3 trying to get over this terrible loss in his life.

But just as things seem to be getting better for him, and he begins to form a relationship with Detective Bianca Holloway, she is fatally shot, dealing another huge blow to Severide and leaving him in tears.

In season 5, he has no choice but to undergo an extremely painful procedure to donate bone marrow to a dying woman without anesthesia, as Severide is her only hope of survival.

And all of this isn't even the full list of problems the character has faced throughout the series, as it would take all day to describe them all.

The Contrast With the Rest of the Cast is Striking

The contrast is even more striking when compared to Matthew Casey, another major character in the series, portrayed by Jesse Spencer, who has received much more positive treatment, being the star of the show who gets all the praise and promotions.

However, some fans believe that it could be the opposite, as taking Severide through a lot of tragedy and hardship allowed him to become incredibly fleshed out and complex.

They say that if he had been left on the sidelines, his personality would have been much more one-dimensional than it is now, suggesting that the writers actually love the character.

Chicago Fire season 12 episode 6 will premiere on February 28, 2024.

Do you think that the writers love Severide or do they hate him?
