Chandler's Entire Love Life on Friends Was a Solid Streak of Lucky Accidents
Friends’ Chandler Bing was never meant to have either a charming on-again, off-again ex or a loving wife. Both these things happened by sheer accident!
Summary:
- Chandler Bing had some of the most memorable romance storylines in Friends, but they were accidental.
- Chandler’s best ex, Janice, was meant to be there for just three episodes, but fans insisted she returned.
- Monica, Chandler’s friend-turned-wife, was also not supposed to stay with him for more than one night.
Chandler Bing, portrayed by Matthew Perry in Friends, has always been one of the most popular and beloved characters of the show. His love life has been interesting, to say the least, but few people know that its most memorable aspects were not planned whatsoever. Both Janice and Monica were not meant to stay with him!
What Was in Store for Chandler and Janice?
Janice, Chandler’s most famous ex with charming laughter, was initially planned to stay on the show for just three episodes. She wasn’t meant to have that laughter at all, too, but Maggie Wheeler, the actress, was too nervous before starring in such a popular sitcom. She came up with Janice’s laughter and mannerisms on the spot.
The bright, loud, and memorable Janice became a fan favorite instantly, and the audience made sure the Friends creators acknowledged that. Thanks to that, Maggie Wheeler became a recurring actor who appeared in at least one episode in each season of Friends until the end, providing us with hilarious and memorable scenes.
What Was Meant for Chandler and Monica?
Even the most iconic couple of Friends, Chandler and Monica, was not planned to stay together. The two friends were supposed to have a one-night stand in London which wouldn’t lead anywhere as they realized it was too weird, similar to what happened between Joey and Rachel later in the show. But fans intervened, again!
The sheer intensity of fans’ excitement, when Monica revealed herself from under the covers of Chandler’s bed, was so huge that the scene had to be reshot. Friends audience adored this weird but cute couple, and a bunch of plans for these characters went down the drain: fans were not willing to forgive the creators if Monica and Chandler fell apart.
Essentially, the two best and most memorable romances that happened to Chandler in Friends were fans’ courtesy. The creators wanted both Chandler and Janice and Chandler and Monica to be one-off things, but the audience voted differently.
