A popular spin-off of the iconic sitcom has been acquired by Netflix!

Summary

  • The Netflix library continues to be updated with the most popular series.
  • As of November 24, Young Sheldon is available on the service.
  • Although it is a prequel spinoff to TBBT, it is a worthy stand-alone story.
  • Netflix continues to gain relevance in the world of streaming platforms, outshining the competitors with its vast library of incredibly popular series.

As part of a deal with Warner Bros., the streamer has licensed the previously exclusive Young Sheldon, one of the most popular sitcoms on both CBS and Max. Check out why this spin-off from The Big Bang Theory is worth your time.

What Is the Popular CBS Series About?

Young Sheldon is different in tone from its predecessor, The Big Bang Theory. While the latter had its fair share of fights, grudges, reunions and friendship vows, it was a full-fledged sitcom. Although the prequel spinoff is also listed as a sitcom, it is much more of a life drama, with plenty of funny, serious, and even tragic moments.

The series tells the story of the childhood of Sheldon Cooper, a child prodigy who lives in Medford, Texas with his father, mother, grandmother, older brother and twin sister. This is the story of Sheldon's emergence as a future brilliant theoretical physicist at CalTech and the shaping of his views on life as he meets both ordinary and extraordinary people, as well as reflections on his relationships with equally eccentric, if not equally brilliant, family members.

Young Sheldon Is Now Available on Netflix

From November 24, Netflix streams Young Sheldon, the next licensed addition from Warner Bros. Previously available only on WB's Max streaming service, the first five seasons of the series will now be available on Netflix.

This is not the streamer's first deal with Warner Bros. In December, the platform will add other high-octane IPs to its library, including DC's Man of Steel, The Suicide Squad, Batman v. Superman, Wonder Woman and Justice League.

Why You Should Watch Young Sheldon Even if You've Never Seen TBBT

Of course, many Netflix subscribers who have never seen The Big Bang Theory but have stumbled upon Young Sheldon in the streaming service's library will ask the perfectly logical question: why watch a show that is a closely tied prequel spin-off?

First and foremost, it's worth noting that the show is indeed about a cult character who is one of TBBT's main draws, Sheldon Cooper. It is also narrated by the actor who plays the adult version of Sheldon, Jim Parsons, and many YS characters were either first introduced on TBBT or appeared in the original series after being featured in the spin-off.

However, that's not to say that Young Sheldon can't be watched as a great stand-alone family story. In fact, it's probably better watched in that context, since you don't have to deal with the chronological errors and conflicting recollections of the characters from the original series.

TBBT fans are still frustrated by the adult Cooper's unfair remarks about his family members: he literally denigrated them, while in YS they are portrayed as multifaceted and vibrant people with their own strengths and weaknesses, but who actually do everything for the sake of their family and do not fit Sheldon’s description at all.

Young Sheldon is the story of one family as the events of the late '80s and mid-'90s unfold, their domestic dramas, worries, and hopes. The other characters that Sheldon meets, whether they be classmates, rivals, or professors, are just as diverse and compelling. And it's all peppered with great jokes!

Currently, only five seasons are available on Netflix, although six have been released so far, so we will have to wait for more additions. Meanwhile, CBS will soon begin airing the new and final Season 7, which will premiere on February 15th at 8pm ET.
