Cavill's 2 Geralt Replacements Prove His Witcher Exit Was Long Overdue
Even after The Witcher, Cavill will continue to showcase his swordsmanship and monster-hunting skills.
Summary
- While Cavill has been primarily associated with Heralt of Rivia in recent years, he is a much sought-after actor beyond The Witcher.
- Cavill has four anticipated roles ahead of him, and two of them could prove to be much better alternatives to his Geralt.
- The actor's in-demand nature proves once again that Netflix should have stuck with his bankable skills.
Cavill has never been a typecast actor, offering a versatile range of acting as he has been entrusted with many unique characters throughout his acting career. He is remembered first for his role as Charles Brandon in The Tudors, then as Superman in the DCEU, Napoleon Solo in The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and of course now many know him as Geralt of Rivia in the controversial live-action adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski's novels, The Witcher.
Despite the script's issues, Cavill has been the main magnet drawing more and more fans to Netflix's adaptation of the Polish author's fantasy franchise. The cold and calculating monster hunter, who hides more than a few traumas but is not always able to suppress his emotions (even with his mutations), immediately appealed to viewers. And the news of Henry's departure from the project was incredibly disappointing, causing many to turn away from the series. But as we said, Cavill is a talented and passionate actor, and he has a number of intriguing roles ahead of him, which only confirms that he should have left The Witcher a long time ago.
Henry Cavill to Lead Reboot of Classic Fantasy Film
One of the most anticipated projects with Cavill is the reboot of the Highlander franchise, one of the most influential fantasy franchises in pop culture. No word yet on whether this will be an exact remake of the original 1986 film starring Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery, but Henry will play the role of the iconic Connor MacLeod.
With Mike Finch (Hitman: Agent 47, John Wick: Chapter 4) working on the script and Chad Stahelski (the entire John Wick franchise) directing, we should expect a highly entertaining, action-packed rollercoaster ride. And given Cavill's love for respectful treatment of source material, as well as his already acquired swordsmanship skills, there's no doubt that we're in for an interesting iteration of the famous Highlander.
Cavill Helming Another Franchise He's Long Been a Fan Of
Cavill has yet another high-profile role (or several) to show off his swordsmanship, monster- and heathen-hunting skills, and emotionless grimace. This time, the actor will find himself in a space fantasy, as Amazon has finally closed the deal with Games Workshop for the rights to adapt the Warhammer 40,000 franchise. From December 18, Amazon can begin to move forward with adaptations in the form of TV series and feature films.
In addition to starring in the live-action adaptations, Henry Cavill will executive produce alongside Max Bottrill, Games Workshop's director of global IP and product design, and Andy Smillie, Games Workshop's EVP of digital and community and author of several novels set in the setting. Unlike Netflix's The Witcher, Henry, a longtime WH40k fan, will finally get to work on the script, and with a team of equally lore-savvy folks on board, we're definitely in for some great Amazon adaptations that will reap huge rewards for both Cavill and the company.
There Are More Upcoming Movies with Cavill
But that's not all. On February 2, 2024, the spy comedy Argylle, directed and produced by Matthew Vaughn and written by Jason Fuchs, which may be related to Vaughn's Kingsman, will be released. Cavill has also signed on to star in Guy Ritchie 's new film, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which will also be about spies.
All of this speaks to the fact that Henry Cavill is a sought-after actor in Hollywood, capable of bringing huge commercial success to any project he jumps on. In other words, he shouldn't have had to suffer so long during the production of The Witcher — there are people who appreciate his creative thinking and acting far more.
