The Featherington family has always been controversial among fans of the Bridgerton books. Although they exist in Julia Quinn's universe, they never play as big a role as they do in the Netflix adaptation. While their presence is simply explained by the need to change the focus from the same 5 or 6 main characters, they're not as well-liked.

And to be fair, the way this family behaves toward everyone around them, including their own daughter and sister, Penelope, does not help matters.

Now, as the show nears the premiere of its third season, which will feature Penelope Featherington as the romantic lead, Bridgerton fans are left wondering what role her family will play.

While the book's Lady Portia Featherington was quite the menace, the show has the potential for a redemption arc, people say.

Why Penelope Featherington’s Mother Hates Her

In both the original book and the show, Penelope was always picked on by her own family. However, the Featheringtons in the books were much more rude about it than the Featheringtons in the show. Portia's attitude towards her daughter is still not all that good, but there is a chance for her to turn things around in season 3.

As we have seen in two seasons of the show, Lady Featherington, like any other mother in London society, made it a priority to see her daughters married off successfully.

However, Penelope's shy demeanor and lack of interest in the marriage market made her a wallflower, and her mother saw her as nothing but a burden.

Now that it has been confirmed that this season Penelope decides to end her longtime crush on Colin Bridgerton, take matters into her own hands, and join the game of finding a suitor, her mother is likely to support this notion.

While it's unlikely that Portia will suddenly do a 180 and become the best mother we know, she could give Penelope a boost and push all the best men in her direction.

As much as you can say about this woman, she doesn't suffer from a lack of confidence, and she’s not afraid to use any tools to set her girls up for success in life.

While this enthusiasm that Portia might show for her daughter's marriage is not the best scenario for Colin, who must suddenly find himself jealous, it would be a nice wrap-up story for the Featheringtons as a family.

After all, chances are we won't be seeing much more of them, so it's better to leave things on a positive note.
