Can people really change?

Summary:

  • Throughout all 3 seasons of Bridgerton, Cressida Cowper was always there at all the balls, trying to find a husband and tormenting the other ladies.
  • In season 3, however, we got a glimpse of what made Cressida so tough in the first place.
  • In the second part, actress Jessica Madsen teases that there will be a chance for her character to open up completely.

Although Bridgerton focuses primarily on the stories of the 8 siblings of the titular family, it is an ensemble show, and it puts the spotlight on some of the most interesting characters in the ton. Love her or hate her, Cressida Cowper has been lurking in the shadows long enough to finally step into the light.

And as it turns out, her journey isn't as easy as viewers might have imagined. Struggling to find a husband for the third season in a row, Cressida becomes a tragic example of a woman crushed by the expectations of Regency society.

Who Will Cressida Marry in Bridgerton?

While Cressida Cowper remains a villain and a bully in Julia Quinn's novels, the show decided to play with her character a bit more and plant some seeds for what seems to be a redemption arc coming her way. While no upbringing can excuse belittling and insulting people the way she did, it seems like her character is going through some major changes.

However, there may not be a chance for Cressida to do a 180. Thanks to Eloise's friendship and guidance, she has softened considerably, but she is still part of a society that measures women by their success in marriage. And so far, she hasn't been successful at all, making her a target for her parents.

The actress behind the character, Jessica Madsen, has teased some further progression of Cressida's journey in the second part of the season while speaking with StyleCaster.

“We’ve seen her break down, and I don’t mean break down in the sense of falling to pieces, but we’ve seen her open up and I think once you open, you’re receptive to change. I hope that by the end of the season, people don’t forget the beginning,” she said.

Though this is still a very vague tease, we can expect Cressida's problems at home to get worse and her parents to put even more pressure on her. Whether she chooses Lord Debling and tries to secure a marriage with a constantly absent husband, or decides to rebel and end up a spinster, there's much more to learn about the youngest of the Cowpers.

If you are interested to see how Bridgerton season 3 will turn out for Cressida and all the other characters involved in a story of romance and intrigue, you can tune in to Netflix on June 13th to not miss the release of the second part.
