Bridgerton season 3 is coming, and it’s going to stray so far from the original book by Julia Quinn that it will basically be a whole different story.

Here are five major changes that Bridgerton season 3 will have to make.

5. No Decade-Long Time Jump

In Romancing Mr. Bridgerton, a decade has passed since Penelope and Colin last saw each other, providing them with a much-needed distance to grow and develop as individuals.

According to the official synopsis for Bridgerton season 3, the events will take place right after season 2 and will stem from Penelope overhearing Colin’s hurtful words about her.

4. No Spinster Penelope

Unfortunately, since there won’t be any time jump, Penelope won’t be a 28-year-old spinster who has sworn off men and is comfortably living on her own.

Instead, in season 3, Penelope will be looking to marry someone who can allow her to stay independent and continue her double life as Lady Whistledown.

3. No Bonding Over Colin’s Travels

In the novel, Colin returns from his travels, and he and Penelope meet to catch up and discuss what he has been up to all these years. This is what allows them to reconnect and eventually fall in love.

Seeing as not so much time will have passed by the beginning of season 3, Penelope and Colin’s romance will probably start elsewhere, specifically with Mr. Bridgerton helping out his friend with finding a husband in order to get back on her good side.

2. Expanding Eloise’s Role

In season 2, Eloise is a pretty prominent character, and when she finds out about Penelope being Lady Whistledown, she cuts off all ties with her bestie. In the book, Ms. Bridgerton is Colin’s main suspect for Lady Whistledown, and her brother is hellbent on uncovering the truth.

Considering all the tension between her and Penelope, Eloise might tell on her ex-friend, should Colin come asking questions and accusing herself of being the ton’s gossip.

1. Having Colin Apologize for His Words

Season 2 ends with Colin revealing to his friends that he would never court Penelope, breaking the poor girl’s heart to pieces. In the book, Penelope overhears Colin as well, but she reveals herself right then and there, making Colin and the others apologize immediately.

This hasn’t happened yet, so having Penelope tell Colin that she’s heard it all will probably be a pivotal point for their relationship in season 3.
