Bridgerton Season 1 Alternate Ending Exists, And It's Just Plain Mediocre
The first season of Bridgerton ended with a fair amount of intrigue, leaving fans wondering what will happen next. But what if we told you that the ending almost didn't make the cut?
That's right, it turns out the final moments of season 1 could've gone very differently, and let's just say, this alternate ending is quite mediocre. Buckle up, as we're going to reveal all the details in this article!
The Ending We Got
In case you don't remember the original ending that well, here's a brief recap. Daphne's romance with Duke Simon is at the center of most episodes, and they end the season with the birth of their first child. But the biggest mystery of the season was the identity of Lady Whistledown, an anonymous columnist that shakes up the town with her newsletters filled with juicy gossip and scandalous secrets. While Eloise concludes that the modiste, Madame Delacroix, is Lady Whistledown, the audience finds out it's actually Penelope Featherington!
The Alternate Ending
The ending we've all seen was packed with plenty of drama, without a doubt. But actress Nicola Coughlan, known as Penelope Featherington in the series, revealed that things nearly took a different turn.
First of all, the big reveal of who Lady Whistledown really is almost didn't happen. In the Bridgerton novels, this doesn't take place until book four, and, as Coughlan reveals, waiting it out until the 4th season was the initial plan for the series, too.
And secondly, the ending was supposed to hint that another character was behind Lady Whistledown. Have you already guessed who it is? Well, it's rival debutante Cressida Cowper. Pretty unexpected, right?
There was even a reshoot of the ending but in the end, the producers changed their minds about the direction for Penelope Featherington.
Which Ending Is Better?
We and many fans think the ending we got is awesome! Let us explain why. Since many fans had already read the books, it was expected that Lady Whistledown's identity would be revealed in later seasons. So, in a way, unmasking her to the viewer so soon was actually a plot twist because most series typically drag these moments out as much as possible. Sometimes, it's better to do the big reveal early on in order to take the character in other, less predictable directions.
What's more, many viewers didn't even think that Penelope could be the gossip writer because the voiceover for Lady Whistledown sounded very different from her. And when it came out it was her all along, it was a great surprise.
