Bridgerton S3 Brings a Huge Change (Not Necessarily a Good One)
There’s no dark and brooding hero this time around.
Summary:
- Bridgerton is a romantic period drama based on Julia Quinn's novels of the same name.
- The first two seasons featured a male lead of a similar type, a dark and mysterious hero who carries a lot of trauma with him.
- The male lead of the third season, Colin Bridgerton, is very different in personality.
- Fans are concerned that his character will end up being misunderstood and taken lightly.
There are many reasons for Bridgerton's blooming success, but the outstanding personalities of the main characters is definitely one of them. While they're not caricatures in any way, each of them had a lot of passion that translated perfectly to the screen and kept the audience so enthralled.
Both Simon Basset and Anthony Bridgerton could have been two sides of the same coin. Toxic and avoiding any sincere connection in the beginning, they developed into vulnerable and loving characters who ended up in happy marriages. This formula worked perfectly for viewers.
By season 3, however, the show needed a change. That change came naturally when Colin Bridgerton took over the show. His gentle personality is already very different from the two previous heroes. The only thing that makes fans afraid of the premiere is that the producers will fail to show the complexity of his feelings.
Colin Bridgerton Personality Change
While both Simon and Anthony needed something to push them into a love marriage, Colin is the only sibling who is open to the idea. He may run away from London and travel more than anyone else, but it's not the prospect of marriage that terrifies him, but the prospect of ending up shallow.
Since season 1, he has struggled to find meaning in his life. His passion has been most evident when he tries to protect people. In season 1 it was Marina Thompson who had to endure the worst of Portia Featherington's suitors, in season 2 it was the entire Featherington family as they fell victim to their own cousin's schemes.
Colin has shown the softness of his character, a high degree of naivete and honor, but also a complete blindness to the person he is destined to be with. Although the combination of these traits makes him far more charming and likable in theory, in practice fans fear that he'll end up being portrayed as boring and indecisive rather than deeply conflicted.
As much as people adore Shonda Rhimes and her style of storytelling, Colin Bridgerton has had the energy of a great supporting character, but not a strong male lead. However, now that we know how much each lead gets to shine in their season, both in terms of looks and personality, hopefully Colin won't be an exception.
If you're interested in seeing what the future holds for Colin and Penelope in season 3 of Bridgerton, be sure to tune in to Netflix on May 16, 2024, to not miss the premiere of the first 4 episodes of the season.
