Bridgerton Fans Found the Perfect Way to Avoid Making Daphne a Rapist
The female gaze that got out of control.
One of the best things about Bridgerton was the way the show handled female perspectives, trying to explore and portray the women's pleasure. Although in an attempt to get a closer and more honest view on that, the show writers seemed to have gone a little too far.
Yes, we are talking about the infamous rape scene that took place in season 1. It started out as a run-of-the-mill intimate scene between Daphne Bridgerton and her husband Simon Basset. Daphne was the initiator, but from what we saw in the episode, the desire was still mutual.
In the middle of the lovemaking, Daphne changed her position so that she could be on top of Simon, thus making it impossible for him to use the pull-out method and avoid making her pregnant.
This scene caused a lot of controversy on the Internet, and many fans were completely shattered to see a rape scene they weren't expecting. And what makes it even more shocking is that it came from Daphne. Although, they found a simple solution that the writers could have used to not make the young girl a literal rapist.
If they had moved the scene where Daphne found out about how conception worked, so that it would take place after she had made Simon finish inside her, it would have been a completely different story.
“Why does this fix it? Because she explicitly doesn't know, something that Simon knew she didn't know and was taking advantage of. So, when he reacts angrily, Daphne doesn't understand what she's done. She just thought that she was taking charge in a lovemaking session,” Reddior Mavakor said.
While this idea would have fixed the controversial scene on the show, it seems the showrunners were well aware of what they were doing with Daphne. Chris Van Dusen previously revealed that the scene was meant to "start a conversation" about consent.
They didn't want the show's characters to be flawless and wanted to give them a chance to make their own choices, even if they weren't the best ones.
