There are two leads in every season.

Summary:

  • Bridgerton is a Netflix romantic period drama series that follows the love stories of each sibling in the Bridgerton family.
  • The third season of the show, which will premiere this May, will focus on Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington.
  • Fans fear that the show will focus too much on Penelope and leave out a real Bridgerton.

Ever since the first season was released, fans of Julia Quinn's original Bridgerton novel series knew they were in for something drastically different. Co-produced by Shondaland and Netflix, the show didn't shy away from making several changes to the source material.

While some were met with cheers from the fanbase, others proved to be controversial. However, none of them had a negative impact on the ratings, which led to another two-season renewal for Bridgerton.

Now, as season 3 approaches its May premiere and the team behind the show begins to release more promotional materials, fans of Polin, which stands for two of this season's main characters, Penelope and Colin, are getting really worried.

As much as we all love Penelope, it seems that Bridgerton is starting to forget who the titular family is.

Bridgerton Season 3 Main Characters

This season of the show will be based on the fourth novel in Julia Quinn's series, Romancing Mister Bridgerton. While the main couple will remain the same, there are a number of changes that are already being noticed before the season premieres.

The show will skip a huge time jump that happened in the books and make the story of unrequited love into a more empowering one by shifting the focus to Penelope's journey of self-discovery. While the idea sounds great, and no one doubts Nicola Coughlan's ability to draw that much attention, fans are concerned about the execution.

So far on the show, Colin's personality has remained something of a mystery. We know he's kind-hearted and noble, judging by his reactions to the Marina Thompson story in season 1, and curious about the world, based on his love of travel. However, his lovable and charismatic book persona was mostly given to the series' Benedict.

Penelope, on the other hand, had a solid character development arc starting in season 1. As Lady Whistledown, she has far more ambition, and that ambition often led her to make serious mistakes. One of them cost her her friendship with Eloise, which will also require a reconciliation this season.

Considering all this, it would be very easy for the writers to simply keep the focus on Penelope, the character who's already pretty well developed, rather than Colin, whose personality we've yet to get to know.

This is exactly what fans fear, and they desperately want Bridgerton to give his main character a chance (and give him back some of Benedict's wit and humor).

To see if the writers have managed to strike a balance for season 3, or if we need to rename the show Lady Whistledown, tune in to Netflix on May 16th to see Bridgerton's return.
