Another sequel has been in talks for years, but now it just got too complicated.

Summary:

  • The 1999 action-adventure franchise The Mummy starring Brendan Fraser got its latest installment back in 2008, but the talks about the franchise’s future sequels haven’t quite stopped since.
  • The first two movies’ director Stephen Sommers has recently revealed what he personally thinks about The Mummy’s chances to come back to the cinema screens.
  • With all the enthusiasm about the franchise’s future coming from its main cast, The Mummy is still a big risk considering its reboot’s big failure upon the latter’s release.

Though Brendan Fraser-led horror comedy franchise The Mummy was seemingly put to its end back in 2008 with its third installment Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, some are still patiently waiting for the team of famous adventurers to come back to screens.

Throughout the years that passed since the latest movie hit the cinemas, The Mummy’s main cast repeatedly notes that they were more than eager to revive the fan-favorite franchise, but now, as its director finally speaks out, the chances turn out to be lower than everyone ever expected.

Back in the day, Stephen Sommers directed two of The Mummy’s films with the third one being passed on to Rob Cohen’s directorial view, yet Sommers still kept a significant position in the franchise’s future as one of the producers.

Though The Mummy’s potential sequels after the third film’s release have been repeatedly discussed, everything seems to be only up in the air right now as the director has recently revealed that he has no clue about Universal’s plans for The Mummy’s universe expansion, if they have any at all.

Is The Mummy Getting a Sequel?

Sommers specified that the studio’s staff had been completely renewed since the time he left for working on other projects, thus he has nobody to ask if there’s anything coming in the way of the beloved franchise.

Yet Sommers still stated that he would absolutely love to work once again with all the actors he collaborated with on The Mummy’s production set. The director doesn’t seem to be alone in his desire as the franchise’s leading actor, Oscar-winning Brendan Fraser, previously admitted he wouldn’t mind at all reuniting with his co-stars if “anyone’s got the right conceit” also jokingly highlighting that he’s “always looking for a job”.

Despite the original crew’s main figures being vocal about their will to revive the franchise, something like this may still come as a big risk for Universal, especially after the franchise-related latest installment.

Being a remake of a 1932 movie of the same name, Sommers’ The Mummy got its own, relatively recent reboot starring Tom Cruise that failed miserably upon its release in 2017.

Still, the chances are that Brandon Fraser’s return to his most famous role may have a very different effect, though the studio has yet a long way of negotiation before it finally makes its mind.
