Bonkers Deleted Cameo in Thor: Ragnarok That Could Have Changed Everything
Thor: Ragnarok was certainly an MCU film that did not take itself too seriously.
From the get help scene with Thor and Loki to the glimpse of Hulk's butt, the film is filled with witty one-liners and gags. However, one scene featuring a cameo from Guardians of the Galaxy's very own Yondu was cut from the film. If it had been left in the final released version of the movie, it would have changed the MCU significantly.
In the now-deleted scene, Hela is attempting to convince Skurge to carry out her orders. Moments before he is about to execute a citizen of Asgard, Skurge stops at the interjection of someone from the crowd. Yondu can then be seen emerging from the background in his full ravager uniform.
As you think he is about to persuade Skurge to not kill anyone, he instead looks around as if confused, asking if anyone knows where "Kevin and Lou's offices are y'all?".
He is of course referring to Kevin Feige (president of Marvel Studios) and Louis D'Esposito (executive producer of the MCU). You can hear someone off-camera respond, giving him directions. To which he responds "thanks man, proceed", waving his hand in a 'don't mind me' motion and exiting the shot. The short scene ends with the Asgardian crowd looking confused and a little surprised.
Although the 30-second clip was ultimately cut from the movie, if it had remained in the released version it would have had significant consequences for the entire franchise.
Firstly, this scene would have represented the first instance of breaking the fourth wall in any of the MCU movies. This ultimately didn't happen until the She-Hulk series, when Jen Walters refers to Kevin Feige as being a robot.
It also breaks the overall sequence of MCU events, as Thor Ragnarok was released after Guardians Vol:2. Meaning the character of Yondu should have been long dead. Additionally, the Guardians would not cross over with other characters/franchises of the universe until later in Infinity War.
The reveal of Yondu appearing as he did in this scene would have symbolised the merging of characters from all over the MCU into one story.
Why did they shoot this deleted scene at all?
The reason for creating this cameo for the movie isn't completely clear. Whether they truly intended to use it or not is only known by Taika Waititi and maybe the Marvel bosses.
However, we know that the scene was shot only because of a circumstance where two sets of filming were happening at the same time. And it was a spontaneous idea to take advantage of the opportunity and film something unscripted. Then again, considering the zany tone of the movie as it is, maybe such a scene would not have been too out of place if it had remained.
