This should've made history alongside that Starbucks cup in GoT.

It's been a while since The Vampire Diaries last hit our screens in 2017, but viewers still aren't ready to let it go.

That's not surprising, as it was a huge hit on The CW, garnered a massive fan base online, and provided a launching pad for the equally successful spinoff, The Originals.

With so many beloved characters, it is no wonder that fans are still looking for answers to the storylines that have plagued them for years.

Almost every show suffers from lazy writing at some point, especially those that run for as many years as The Vampire Diaries.

There have been more than a few instances where viewers have been left unimpressed or even disappointed by the outcome of the storyline. However, few of them make people come back for the answers nine years later.

"Why didn't anyone suspect that Katherine was still alive when she never passed through Bonnie the first time she "died". This plot hole has been driving me nuts and I thought they might resolve it tonight but it doesn't look like they will now. Am I missing something?" Redditor tybr questioned back in 2014 at r/VampireDiaries.

Since then, the thread has continued to receive comments and updates from other people looking into the exact same plot hole and leaving with no answers.

By all accounts, it seems that the writers' plan was for the audience to shrug off this inconsistency and believe everything they saw without questioning it twice.

Otherwise, Katherine's death would make no sense.

While some fans at the time tried to protect the showrunners by chalking it up to the technicalities of the show, those who re-watch the show today can't believe how many little details made no sense and went unnoticed at first.

Of course, due to the overall positive reception of The Vampire Diaries, these plot holes didn't affect the overall quality as much as they could have, but they continue to annoy viewers to this day.

If you want to revisit The Vampire Diaries and make your own list of plot inconsistencies, you can do so by streaming it on HBO Max, Peacock TV, Prime Video, Vudu or Apple TV.
