You don’t know anything about surprising genre mixes unless you’ve watched this Western sci-fi epic with time travel and, apparently, conflicting timelines.
Rarely does anyone try to mix genres so different as Western and sci-fi. Each of them typically focuses on their respective classics, whether it’s good gunslingers hunting down bad gunslingers and robber barons in the West or scientists messing something up and endangering our entire species in the far future. Not both… Usually.
This iconic Prime Video TV show defies all rules of both these genres by mixing them together and throwing in some supernatural stuff — and it does so with style.
Outer Range Subverts Expectations
If you’ve watched enough sci-fi movies and TV shows, you may very well chuckle when you hear about time travel and alternate universes, and you have the right to — most of the time. Outer Range proves that even the most well-known tropes can be used very differently, subverting any and all expectations and cliches of the past.
Outer Range’s premise is simple: a rancher who’s fighting for his land (“Classic!” Said every Western fan ever) finds a mysterious anomaly in Wyoming's wilderness. Before he knows it, he’s pulled into an intricate web of time and space manipulations and has to grapple with the unknown both literally and figuratively, fighting not only for his own life and future but potentially, for those of the world.
Outer Range S2 Trailer Reveals New Twists
Without spoiling too much, the recently dropped trailer hinted at several new plot twists which almost make Season 1 look like the most straightforward tale ever. Suddenly, “time is fluid,” and it feels like Season 2 will present two alternate timelines thanks to Joy’s time travel at the end of the previous series. And that’s not all!
Something shocks Royal and Autumn in Wyoming, suggesting that either the consequences of the time travel catch up to them in the least expected way or that someone else starts playing a huge part in the story, taking over the initiative from them. Autumn and Wayne now can see the future and perhaps, there are several potential outcomes for the story, and the new fight will determine which one wins.
It’s hard to make out anything concrete from the trailer, but there will be more mind-boggling twists and we’ll longingly recall the “nice and simple” days of Outer Range Season 1, that’s for sure.
