Best Modern Rom-Com with 91% on RT Is Leaving Netflix This Week, Don't Miss It
It is a true gem of the genre.
Love between people of different social classes is one of the most popular plots in melodrama. Most often, it is a story about ordinary girls who fall in love with heirs to huge fortunes.
In 2018, one of the box office leaders unexpectedly became such a romcom – and this, after all the talk about the genre being long dead.
Crazy Rich Asians Was a Breakthrough for the Rom-Com Genre
Crazy Rich Asians, a romantic comedy about social inequality, is based on the bestselling book of the same name by Kevin Kwan. The author knows the mores of Singapore's closed high society firsthand, coming from an influential family of bankers.
And if the original book was a rather biting satire, the film adaptation turned out to be much more melodramatic and light-hearted.
Crazy Rich Asians, which made back its budget seven times over, proved that rom-coms are indeed enjoying a renaissance, and that films without big-name actors can still be successful at the box office.
Crazy Rich Asians became a box-office hit, not least because it was the first major Hollywood film in which all the leading roles were played by actors of Asian descent. And of course, Jon M. Chu's movie turned out to be an excellent advertisement for Singapore, a city of billionaires.
What Is Crazy Rich Asians About?
An ethnic Chinese woman from America, Professor Rachel Chu, is dating the heir of a rich and influential Singaporean family, Nick Young. However, she is completely unaware of her beau's status, as he leads a modest lifestyle.
One day, Nick invites the woman to Singapore for the wedding of his best friend. There, she is surprised to learn that her beloved is almost a god in his homeland. Rachel has a hard time fitting in with the local crowd of young rich people, but worse, Nick's arrogant mother doesn't like her at all.
Crazy Rich Asians Features One of the Most Spectacular Weddings
The main character of the movie is a modern version of Cinderella, who marries the heir of an ancient and incredibly rich Singaporean clan. The wedding is, of course, on a grand scale, with hundreds of guests and celebrities from all over the world, as well as many unique sculptures, fountains and rare jewelry brought to the event.
The ceremony itself takes place in a small tropical paradise literally built from scratch in the middle of a modern metropolis.
Jon M. Chu's movie is a breath of fresh air in the genre, but at the same time it relies on the classic formula of class conflict. As a result, the movie is often included in lists of the best rom-coms of recent years.
Crazy Rich Asians Is Leaving Netflix
But hurry if you haven't seen Crazy Rich Asians yet – the movie will be leaving Netflix on October 6.
