BBC Is Yet to Make a Dramedy Better Than This Gem with 100% Tomatometer
You'll laugh, cry, and feel everything that's in between.
The best comedy television series of recent years, as is often the case, came about by accident. The project grew out of a one-woman play by theater actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who was approached by a BBC representative with a proposal to turn the show into a full-fledged story for the small screen. Thus was born Fleabag, which Waller-Bridge not only wrote but also starred in.
What is Fleabag About?
The plot may seem simple: a confused main character mourns her best friend, tries to repair her relationship with her sister and save a dying cafe from bankruptcy, and falls in love with a Catholic priest. But it is hard to find a more charismatic and relatable character on television.
Today, several years after its premiere in 2016, it can be said that Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Fleabag has made TV history. The show is often called an example of a dramedy where there is only one step from laughter to tears.
In the case of Fleabag, it is difficult to separate the heroine and the screenwriter, and it was the frankness that made the project a sensation.
Fleabag Captivates Viewers with Its Absolute Sincerity
Critics and viewers alike have loved Fleabag – it currently holds a 100% and 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Charming, imperfect characters with a good sense of humor, plenty of problems and a good dose of cynicism have been seen before, but Waller-Bridge's series is impressive in its concentration of all these elements. Fleabag shows that it is worth talking about childhood trauma, the loss of loved ones, the inability to connect with parents, and the fear of loneliness.
Fleabag often looks directly at us, breaking the fourth wall in a way that no one has done before or since. She takes the audience as allies and witnesses to her sorrows and joys, reminding us that we should not be afraid to look weak and insecure, that half of our plans will not come to fruition, that love may not be found, that opinions may change, but that we will definitely come out stronger.
Andrew Scott 's Performance in Season 2 is One of His Best to Date
Andrew Scott's performance as a criminally hot priest in Season 2 has caused quite a stir on British and even international TV. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, seems to have revealed to the world a previously unknown formula for success: if you want to make something undeniably good even better, just add Andrew Scott to it.
The first season of Fleabag was already brilliant in itself: the bright and witty reflections of the main character brought out all the possible emotions. However, Scott's appearance added the missing amount of intrigue and sexuality to Fleabag.
Watching two talented people interact is always a pleasure, but when those people are Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Mr. Andrew Scott, watching the show becomes a real pleasure. What's more, Waller-Bridge has created perhaps the most ambitious love triangle of the new TV era: him, her, and God. With a very honest, but sad, ending.
Where to Stream Fleabag?
Both seasons of Fleabag are available to watch on Prime Video and Apple TV.
