A disturbing yet hilarious dark comedy about a hitman trying to escape his dark past through acting has become a phenomenon on HBO.

Even now, the average Rotten Tomatoes rating for all three seasons of Barry is 99%. But no matter how much we wish for more, it's time for the last, final season.

On March 7, HBO released the official teaser for season 4, in which we see the title character, Barry Berkman, dealing with the consequences of the season 3 finale.

The teaser also features all the main characters from previous seasons (though mostly in the form of Barry's hallucinations): acting class members (along with their mentor, with whom Barry becomes obsessed), the Chechen mafia, and those whose lives have been ruined by Barry's (not so deliberate) actions.

In an interview with Variety, co-creator and star Bill Hader confirmed the status of the season and reflected on the filming and his own feelings about the finale.

According to Hader, the creators, who had stopped filming season 3 because of the coronavirus, started writing the script for season 4 first and then returned to the previous one.

So on the output, we get a season with a well-thought-out plot and a finale that the writers had an idea about for the release of season 3.

"What happens in season 4 is structurally radical in some ways, but it made sense for what I think the characters needed to go through, and what I think the whole show is always kind of headed towards", Hader shares.

It looks like the narrative will be drastically different, leaning heavily on the darker aspects of events. Will there be room for comedy (at least a tragic one)?

Hader teased that something weird would happen in season 4 that would be "fun, but also incredibly bittersweet". In contrast, what would happen in the last episodes, in his opinion, "was very sad".

It is likely that we will never get to see the redemption of an Afghanistan veteran who wants to make a better life for himself. But you never know!

Although it has been a "life-changing experience", Bill Hader says he will not realize the sadness of saying goodbye to his project until the last episode is released, and he starts something new.

The episodes 1 and 2 of Barry season 4 will premiere on April 16 on HBO.
