Anya Taylor-Joy Only Has 30 Lines in Furiosa & George Miller Has a Solid Reason For It
The actress’ silent appearances in this year’s biggest hits are in fact a big win for her.
Summary:
- Anya Taylor-Joy has already made two quite impressive, yet relatively silent appearances in two big movies of this year, and both directors seem to be reassured that the absence of extra words actually works out better.
- While the actress’ most recent action movie Furiosa is waiting for its big premiere in Cannes, the film’s director reached out to everyone concerned to explain the movie’s viral detail concerning Anya Taylor-Joy’s limited amount of phrases on screen.
- George Miller seems to have formed quite a solid opinion about this matter as he revealed some of his personal favorites that eventually inspired his directing style.
Though the whole cinema’s concept originally boils down to the idea that the action itself is much more important than the words that accompany it, some modern directors seem to have perceived this idea quite literally.
It all started earlier this year when Denis Villeneuve expressed his hope for once seeing movies that would contain no words at all, stressing that he hates dialogue. The director later on made a U-turn admitting that the dialogue is still crucial, yet he seems to have accidentally started a whole new trend of removing all the lines from the films, and one more proclaimed director has joined the movement.
Ironically, both filmmakers have one more thing, or rather an actress, in common as they both invited Anya Taylor-Joy to make an appearance in their brand new films. The actress starred in Villeneuve’s Dune: Part 2 earlier this year and now is back on track with George Miller’s Furiosa heading for its official premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
The early previews have recently proved that Taylor-Joy, while portraying the movie’s main character, has no more than 30 lines in the entire film run. Some may have found this quite weird given that the main characters are usually the ones that talk more than anyone else, but George Miller doesn’t seem to coincide with them here.
Talking about his brand new action film also starring Chris Hemsworth, Miller clarified his point about the viral movie detail about the amount of phrases that were given to Anya Taylor-Joy.
According to the director, talking is what brutally kills the whole essence of the movie’s action, something that “tends to slow things down” while the film is usually something that should have a high speed drive.
Revealing his distaste for conversation-coded movies, Miller couldn’t help mentioning his personal favorites that date back to the times of the cinema’s creation.
The director admitted that he’s a huge fan of silent movies starring big industry figures like Buster Keaton or Charlie Chaplin that still had made it possible for complex stories to get to the viewers without being told with actual words.
