Another Iconic 'Sigma' Actor Addressed Delusional The Boys Fans: 'You're Missing the Point Entirely'
Antony Starr, The Boys’ Homelander actor, was shocked to learn that some fans idolize his character, and he really wants all those people to get their heads straight.
In The Boys ’ world, there’s a problem with superpowered humans, and their groups are only multiplying. In order to control the others, the group of the most powerful mutants was created and served as watchdogs.
This group is called the Seven, and its leader, Homelander, is anything but a good person — or a hero.
Homelander is a narcissist, a sociopath, and a psychopath. He’s obsessed with power and the public’s opinion of him, and he uses overly patriotic rhetorics and propagandistic methods to hide the ugly truth about himself and get the people on his side. Homelander is basically a caricature of an evil politician, more or less.
Nevertheless, this character has become incredibly popular and joined the “sigma club” — the ranks of fictional characters that are considered role models by young people who can’t tell right from wrong.
To give you a rough idea of what a “sigma” character is, Patrick Bateman from American Psycho is one of the best examples.
Unlike his fictional counterpart, Antony Starr, the Homelander actor, is fully aware that his character is nothing but a petty maniac. Starr didn’t expect to learn that there are thousands of people who idolize Homelander — and when he did, he was horrified. The actor shared his thoughts on that in a recent interview.
“There’s a very strange thing that’s happened with the character, though he is clearly not a good guy. A lot of people have glommed onto him. There’s a weird element out there that actually kind of idolize him. I’ve seen some sh*t on Twitter and I’m like, ‘Wait, What? You are missing the point entirely!’” exclaimed Antony Starr in horror.
The actor himself doesn’t have the highest opinion of his character. Starr thinks that Homelander is pathetic — but very, very dangerous. People are admiring him for all the wrong reasons, both in the series and in real life.
“He’s the loneliest guy in the world. He’s got no one to relate to but himself. His isolation is immaculate. It’s almost perfect. He’s not stupid; he’s incredibly emotionally stunted. <...> We’ve always tried to keep our horrible, warped, twisted little baby growing,” shared the actor.
Well, there you have it, “sigma bros.” First, it was Christian Bale; now, it’s Antony Starr. When your heroes directly tell you that you’re missing the point by idolizing them, it’s as clear of a signal that you’re wrong as it gets, isn’t it?
