Andrew Garfield's Naughty (But Hilarious) Line Was Too Much for No Way Home
Way back in 2002, Spider-Man fans could not have anticipated what they'd be in store for two decades later: Three versions of Spider-Man joined in the battle against a multiversal threat.
As expected, the quick-witted web slingers gave fans one of the funniest MCU movies to date. But one joke went a smidge too far and was ultimately cut from the theatrical release.
No Way Home featured the three cinematic versions of Spider-Man we've seen so far – played by Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland.
Garfield and Holland had comic-accurate webbing; it was a synthetic webbing that they'd created, along with a mechanism to shoot it from their wrists.
On top of being brilliant science students, their spider-powers granted them web-building abilities that manifested in an innate understanding of how to create their webs.
Maguire's Spider-Man had organic webbing that shot out of his wrists when he closed his middle two fingers. While it wasn't canon to the main comic version of Spidey, that power had been featured in a few alternate storylines.
Holland and Garfield (labelled "Peter One" and "Peter Three" in the movie) were dumbfounded when they found out Maguire ("Peter Two") had webbing come from inside his body.
Hilarity quickly ensued. They flooded Maguire with questions, leading to Holland asking, "Does it come out of anywhere else?"
It was a seemingly innocent question with a semi-obvious double entendre, but it was just subtle enough to get away with in the family-friendly MCU.
The film was re-released the following September with the subtitle More Fun Stuff, complete with a few never-before-seen clips.
One deleted scene was released that went a little past that fine line of subtlety. Garfield, fascinated by the concept of organic webbing shooting from Peter Two's wrists, muttered, "I want to see the holes."
It was a funny moment, but it makes sense that it was cut. The MCU has had a lot of adult-themed jokes and comments, but since the Disney acquisition, it's all been very subtle. Just dirty enough to catch a few laughs, not dirty enough to anger parents.
The relationship between the three Peters – and seeing Garfield and Maguire back in their suits years after their last appearance – led to No Way Home becoming one of the most popular superhero movies to date.
Its $1.9 billion box office was the highest among all Spider-Man movies, and the third-highest in the MCU.
It's not yet clear if Garfield or Maguire will return to Marvel. Fans have pushed for their return in Secret Wars, the 2026 film that will end the Multiverse Saga – and No Way Home proved that the studio is more than willing to give the fans what they want.
