And Just Like That… has just graced us with the first two episodes of season 2, and so far, things are not going well.

The show premiered in 2021, and it got off to a rocky start from the very first episode: Carrie’s dream guy, Mister Big, was ruthlessly killed off just like that. How he died is another story. We still can’t believe that a Peloton bike was the end of such a major character!

John Preston, a.k.a. Mister Big, was with the original series from the very beginning in 1998. This character was once the IT guy for both Carrie and all the female viewers. Sexy, confident, a bit of a bad boy – that was the dream… before we all realized that we weren’t into saving toxic men anymore, that is.

Despite the fact that Mister Big’s romantic shenanigans were no longer relevant in the post-#MeToo climate, he was still unmatched in his energy.

Yes, he couldn’t commit to Carrie for the longest time, cheated on his wife, and made all sorts of questionable choices. We still loved him dearly.

When And Just Like That… killed off John in season 1, the showrunners quickly realized that fans were missing his endearingly overbearing presence on the show and thought that they could salvage the situation by introducing a character with a similar personality.

This time, it wasn’t a guy for Carrie though – instead, it was a non-binary love interest for Miranda.

Che Diaz, played by Sara Ramirez, has come into the girls’ lives in season 1 and seems to be there to stay. However, they are not Mister Big and will never be Mister Big, no matter how much nonchalant and cocky energy they exude.

Che could’ve been such a great character, bringing a different dynamic to the group, but the writers just turned them into the carbon copy of John circa 2000.

Che treats Miranda worse than Mister Big did Carrie, and we are supposed to believe that the red-headed career ladder-climbing feminist just takes it all and looks at them with puppy-dog eyes? Nope, just nope.

Che has John’s attitude and swagger, but they lack his charm and motivation, which is why this Big replacement just doesn’t fly with the fans. Hopefully, Che will become more likable as season 2 progresses. Fingers crossed!
