The singer didn’t deserve to be portrayed this way at all.

Summary:

  • Fans of Amy Winehouse have been looking forward to seeing a biographical movie about their favorite singer since 2018, but the result now has them fuming.
  • The new drama is getting panned a lot for its script and casting choices.
  • It is claimed the 2015 documentary depicted the life of Winehouse way better.

Biopics about musicians are now seemingly hit or miss, as during the last few years we both had well-received Rami Malek’s Bohemian Rhapsody and Austin Butler ’s Elvis, and panned Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody and Bob Marley: One Love.

Many filmmakers were trying to get the rights to depict the life of another singer, whose life is really reminiscent of a dark movie without even turning it into a script, Amy Winehouse. Before she died in 2011 from alcohol poisoning, the soul queen led a really challenging career that became a source of not only gossip, but also much inspiration.

In 2018 it was finally announced the first biographical movie about Winehouse’s path would be made. Later it was handed over to Sam Taylor-Johnson, who is no stranger to biopics, as she directed the acclaimed John Lennon movie, Nowhere Boy (2009).

However, after the movie’s recent release in the UK it appeared to be clear it’s a total failure. Told from Amy’s own perspective, it is claimed to distort the image of the musician and to showcase her complicated rise to fame in a completely false light.

Is Back to Black Really That Bad?

The biographical drama, titled Back to Black after the 2006 groundbreaking album, is now fairly compared to the documentary film Amy, made by Asif Kapadia in 2015. The truthful image of Winehouse’s life presented in this 96%-rated doc brought her “justice more than this biopic could ever try to”, as voiced by Redditor @weird_monki619.

The point is not only that the movie’s narrative goes against the real-life evidence, as it does a lot of work to romanticize the life and the creative process of the singer, but even the casting of the leading actress, Industry’s Marisa Abela, appears to be a total disaster.

“From that clip they released the lead performance looks awful, and it’s not just a case of her voice being too different - the mannerisms and everything are completely wrong,” says @Electronic-Set5594 about Back to Black’s lead.

All this criticism is reflected in the film’s current Rotten Tomatoes score, 36%. Thus, it may seem that the Amy biopic leaves only a negative mark upon the singer’s legacy.

While Back to Black is out now in theaters in the US, you can check out the 2015 brilliant documentary, which is available for watching on Prime.
