Those years weren’t enough for people to accept its truth.

Summary:

  • The 1995 controversial drama followed the exploits of an HIV positive teenage boy who hangs around the city looking for the girls to sleep with.
  • The movie was received with great caution at the time, but now it’s considered a cultish film, even though it still sparks discussions on Reddit.
  • It’s a must-watch for the fans of realistic cinema.

Back in the era of the 90s, filmmakers were presumably much bolder than they are nowadays; after all, today, the movies’ ratings and the exploration of the forbidden and controversial themes interfere with their financial and critical successes much more.

29 years ago, the world saw the movie that imitated life in the wildest way possible and raised the question of the reasonability of such a genuine and even horrifying depiction of teenagers’ life. The drama still sparks debates on Reddit.

It’s the movie Kids we’re talking about, released in 1995 and making waves up to this day.

Its plot centers on the amoral teen named Telly with his goal to sleep with as many girls as possible without telling them he’s HIV positive. He and his friend Casper hang around the city, shoplifting, smoking pot and, of course, looking for the unaware girls.

At the same time, one of his early victims, Jennie, after learning she got HIV from Telly, tries to warn the other girls about his disease. She is going to confront the rude assaulter at a party, but before that everything goes in the most horribly wrong way.

This movie isn’t afraid to test viewers’ limits at all, as it’s full of the unpleasant demonstrations and talks about sex, rape, alcohol, and drugs. It can certainly disturb the unprepared audience and be perceived as the never-ending provocation.

Some people claim it’s too disturbing and nasty, but the reality is that the highschoolers faced the same problems and had the same vile conversations not only in the 90s, but sometimes even now. For its realism and the amount of the issues it raises it can be compared to our days’ Euphoria, also trying to depict the true life of teenagers.

Kids was a back-then box office success, grossing $20.4 million against a $1.5 million budget, even though it caused controversy over its treatment of the socially painful themes. Since that it has clearly become a cult classic film.

“Most movies simulate a time/place but Kids is one of the few movies that IS the time/place,” fairly admits Redditor @RVLVR-OCLT about the movie.
