1. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (Best Short Film)

This charming adaptation of a Roald Dahl short story features Benedict Cumberbatch as the title character. Henry Sugar is a bored and wealthy man who dedicates his life to learning a mystical new skill, and soon surprises himself by using his power for the good of mankind.

2. Rustin (Best Actor)

Based on the true story of Bayard Rustin, an activist who worked alongside Martin Luther King Jr.

Rustin's commitments to human rights and racial equality made him a fighter on the forefront of the Civil Rights movement. Unfortunately, the fact that he was openly gay meant that he was sidelined by history and all but forgotten until this beautiful biography.

3. American Symphony (Best Original Song)

Going far deeper than a standard musical documentary, American Symphony follows a year in the life of musician John Batiste. His goal is to compose a symphony for Carnegie Hall, which the documentary tracks – but it simultaneously shows the struggles of Batiste and his wife Suleika Jaouad when she is diagnosed with cancer.

On the same day that Batiste's 11 Grammy nominations were announced, his wife starts chemotherapy. Thus begins an extraordinary documentary about art, music, and love.

4. May December (Best Original Screenplay)

Once upon a time, a 36-year-old woman had an affair with a 13-year-old schoolmate of her son. She went to prison, where she had his child.

It's now twenty years later, and the couple is married with children. Their quiet life under the radar is disrupted when their story is adapted into a movie, and a voracious actress moves in with them under the name of research.

5. Society of the Snow (Best International Feature)

Based on the amazing survival story of Uruguayan Flight 571, Society of the Snow tells the story of an Uruguayan rugby team's crash in the Andes mountains. Several members of the team survive the accident, but now they're faced with an even bigger challenge: staying alive in the freezing temperatures.

6. Nyad (Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress)

Here's another movie based on a remarkable true story: the tale of Diana Nyad, a 64-year-old marathon swimmer who decided to attempt the 110-mile swim from Cuba to Florida.

Annette Bening is up for a Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Nyad, while Jodie Foster got a Supporting Actress nod for her work as Bonnie Stoll, Nyad's best friend who comes along for the adventure.

7. The After (Best Live Action Short)

Dayo watched his daughter die in a violent crime, and lost his wife shortly after. Grieving and traumatized, Dayo isolates himself from family and friends to avoid his grief. One day, his job as a rideshare driver brings him in contact with a passenger who forces him to face his feelings.

8. Nimona (Best Animated Feature)

In a futuristic (but also medieval) world, a disgraced knight has been accused of a crime he didn't commit. The only way to clear his name is to team up with a hyperactive, shapeshifting teen – who may also be the monster he's sworn to defeat.

9. El Conde (Best Cinematography)

In this dark, satirical 'biography', Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet is revealed to be a 250-year old vampire. Now sick of being alive, he haunts his decaying manor with a faithful servant and concerned wife.

If you like your comedy with a liberal splash of horror (or vice versa), El Conde is the 2024 Oscars pick for you.

10. Maestro (Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Actor & Actress)

It's a film about music and theater, but mostly it's a love story.

Bradley Cooper plays legendary American composer Leonard Bernstein, who embarks on a tumultuous affair with an actress named Felicia Montealegre. The movie charts the next three decades of their complex relationship.

All ten of these movies can now be streamed on Netflix. The 96th Oscars will air live on ABC Sunday, March 10, at 7 p.m. EDT. The ceremony will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
