It’d be illegal to miss these gems!

Courtroom movies are the dramas on which it’s easy to get hooked, watching the stress and the technicalities of trials and trying to figure out who is right: the prosecution or the defense. They attract millions of viewers observing the attempts to maintain law and order not only in the courthouse, but also in the participants’ minds.

Here are 5 of the subgenre’s must-watches, chosen by Reddit’s fair judgment and available on Netflix.

  1. A Few Good Men (1992)

Starring Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, Demi Moore, it appears to be one of the most popular legal dramas. It follows a trial that takes place in a military court, and the case itself involves two U.S. Marines, accused of murdering their companion. The movie’s great cast, impeccably written dialogues and development of the plot make it worth-watching not only for the genre’s fans, but for all cinema lovers.

  1. The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020)

Another star-studded movie in the list centers on a group of anti–Vietnam War protesters charged with conspiracy and the intention of inciting riots at the 1968 Chicago Democratic convention.

There are lots of meaningful flashbacks adding to the wholesomeness of the courtroom plotline, and the performances of Sacha Baron Cohen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Keaton and Eddie Redmayne are really convincing here.

  1. The Lincoln Lawyer (2011)

Matthew McConaughey’s legal thriller has the actor playing a controversial criminal defense attorney during a trial of a rich young man suspected of rape. It perfectly depicts the inner conflicts that the defense faces while working for ambiguous people, when the fair question arises: do the guilty ones even need to be defended? It’s a must-watch for those who like the character-driven mysterious movies.

  1. Anatomy of a Fall (2023)

One of the best movies of the last year, Sandra Hüller’s Oscar-nominated drama, follows a woman accused of her husband’s murder with their blind son being the only witness to his death. The onscreen trial offers the heated debates between the prosecutor and Hüller’s courageous character, sharing the details of her failed relationship to the court.

  1. Liar, Liar (1997)

Last comes quite an unexpected choice, as it’s more a comedy than a legal movie, but it also deserves the attention of the court films’ enjoyers. Here Jim Carrey stars as a lawyer, who built his entire career on lies and then found himself incapable of lying due to a curse. The movie shows how he tries to maintain his career in these obstacles.
