All 5 Scary Movies, Ranked by Rotten Tomatoes From Disaster to Perfection
Want to make this Halloween not only scary, but also funny? Check out the legendary horror parody franchise.
The Scary Movie franchise is part of the greatest mainstream comedies of the 2000s, which had a controversial reputation due to below-the-belt jokes. Although not always inventive, but quite effective and daring, the parody franchise made fun of many popular horror movies.
We've ranked all the films in the franchise according to Rotten Tomatoes, so horror and comedy fans can skip the worst ones and only pay attention to the ones that deserve it.
5. Scary Movie 5 — 4%
Scary Movie 5 is a spoof of the Paranormal Activity franchise. Additional inspiration came from other popular horror films of the past decade: Mother!, Insidious, Evil Dead, Sinister, and The Cabin in the Woods.
The main star of the series, Anna Faris, declined to participate in the sequel. Her place was taken by Ashley Tisdale. The creative crisis and the departure of the main cast members from the project buried the franchise for good. The final movie bombed at the box office and earned a disastrous 4% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
4. Scary Movie 2 — 14%
The second part of the Scary Movie franchise pokes fun at numerous horror movie cliches about exorcism and ghosts. The opening scene takes a rather rough approach to the classic of the genre — the horror film The Exorcist.
The sequel recouped its production costs, but the box office was significantly lower compared to the first movie. In addition, the film was not well received by critics and audiences alike — its rating on Rotten Tomatoes is only 14%.
3. Scary Movie 4 — 34%
Scary Movie 4 is a combination of spoofs of the blockbuster War of the Worlds, the horror movie The Grudge, the thriller The Village, and the Saw franchise.
The fourth film is the last chance to enjoy the comedic duo of Anna Faris and Regina Hall. Both actresses left the project after this installment. Despite the writers and directors' success in the comedy genre, the movie only received a 34% on Rotten Tomatoes and became a harbinger of the franchise's soon-to-come death.
2. Scary Movie 3 — 35%
For the third movie, which was inspired by The Ring and Signs, Anna Faris and Regina Hall reprised their roles as Cindy and Brenda.
Scary Movie 3 was directed by comedy legend David Zucker, who, along with Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams, created such a beloved hit as Airplane!, and written by prolific comedy screenwriters Craig Mazin and Pat Proft, but it still only scored 35% on Rotten Tomatoes.
1. Scary Movie 1 — 51%
The first movie in the Scary Movie franchise parodies two popular slasher movies: Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. The first installment became a box office hit — with a budget of $19 million, the film grossed an impressive $278 million.
The star of the Scream franchise, Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell, was the prototype for the main character Cindy. For the young Anna Faris, the role of the naive "final girl" turned out to be a big breakthrough. But our sympathies go to the brave Regina Hall for the epic movie theater massacre scene.
