Get ready for the next installments of the Star Wars saga coming after 2026.

Summary

  • Dates for 3 all-new Star Wars movies have been set for future release, but they will not be coming anytime soon.
  • The new films are said to be both a continuation of the previous films and to bring characters from the Disney+ series to the big screen.
  • Rumor has it that Dawn of the Jedi will take place 25,000 years before the first film, and may hint at a new direction for the franchise.

Exciting news for Star Wars fans - three entirely new movies have now been confirmed and their release dates revealed.

Now, we know that many of you will be asking, 'Why should I be excited about more Star Wars?' Considering the less-than-stellar response to the last trilogy in the franchise, it's easy to see why fans might be questioning the release of more films. But since The Rise of Skywalker, Disney has done its best to redeem itself with some quality series set in the universe.

Shows like The Madalorian, Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett, Andor, The Bad Batch, and more have brought Star Wars love back to an all-time high. Disney is now looking to bring some of that magic back to the big screen over the next few years, and frankly, if they get it right, it looks like it could be something spectacular.

The Mandalorian & Grogu (May 22, 2026)

The first of the new films to be released will feature none other than fan favorites Mando and baby Grogu in their own title movie. As announced in January, series creator Jon Favreau will write and direct a feature film tied to the TV series.

Nothing is known yet about the plot of the movie. However, it has been announced that producers Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni are working on the project and that filming will begin later this year. Unfortunately, Mandalorian fans will have to wait quite a while for the movie to be released, and with no details on when Season 4 will be released, it may be a while before we see Din Djarin or Grogu again.

New Jedi Order (December 18, 2026)

Although this movie has been in the works for a while, a movie centered around the ongoing story of Rey will likely be released second. Although there is no official name for the film at this time, it is commonly referred to as 'New Jedi Order,' as it is said to pick up where the character's story left off in the previous film as she attempts to rebuild the Jedi Order.

Not only will Daisy Ridley return to the role, but the film is expected to be directed by Canadian-Pakistani Oscar-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The award-winning director has a history of making films that highlight gender inequality.

In an interview with CNN, when asked about her hopes for the movie, she cheerfully replied, 'It's About Time' We Had a Female Filmmaker 'Come Forward to Shape the Galaxy Far, Far Away'.

As for the release date, it certainly has enough time to be ready for the December 2026 slot. However, there have been rumors of rewrites and delays due to last year's writers strike, so there is no telling when filming will actually begin.

MandoVerse Crossover or Dawn of the Jedi (December 17, 2027)

The third movie in the new Star Wars film schedule is actually between two likely possibilities about which very little is known. However, the release date of December 2027 is pretty much confirmed. What is known about the two potential movies are some basic plot hints.

One possible movie is a MandoVerse crossover (consisting of The Mandalorian and other related series), which is said to culminate in a 'climactic story event'. What these crossover events might be is unknown, but it is said to be set in the Republic era, after the events of the original trilogy.

The other possible third Star Wars movie is called 'Dawn of the Jedi' and will be directed by James Mangold. The story will reportedly 'go back to the dawn of the Jedi,' exploring the origins of the Force and taking place some 25,000 years before the events of A New Hope. While this may seem like a strange direction for Disney to go in, it is believed that this film will be the start of a new era within the Star Wars timeline, and possibly a complete reboot for the saga.
