Alexander Payne’s Drama Dubbed ‘The Best of 2023’ Coming to Prime Soon
We still believe it deserved that Oscar Award…
It’s no surprise that some movies end up being more hyped around than some others, but all the internet buzz doesn't always mean the film is going to actually be a great one. However, history shows that the movies that are all over social media usually are the ones who do well.
One of the most hyped movies of 2023 was Christopher Nolan ’s Oppenheimer, no doubt. The story of the father of the atomic bomb featuring brilliant Cillian Murphy ended up being a huge success among the viewers and showed amazing box office.
But what's more, the movie bagged seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor as well. However, before that happened, there were a lot of speculations about which movie would end up taking home the Best Picture Award.
Why Didn’t The Holdovers Win Best Picture?
Half of the Academy Award fans wanted the victory not for Nolan’s biopic, but for Alexander Payne's The Holdovers. The movie also had a ton of nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing. The only win though that the team got was Da'Vine Joy Randolph’s Award for Best Supporting Actress.
There was also a scandal involving the film's leading man that cast a shadow over the film and probably led to the Academy's decision not to give the main award to The Holdovers, even though everyone around it felt it was a more deserving winner.
What Is The Holdovers About?
The Holdovers has a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes and there seem to be not a single bad review about it anywhere. Well, there’s no wonder, because everything about the dramedy was perfect.
Starting with the powerful story that follows a highly disliked history professor at an all-male school in New England Paul Hunham, brilliantly portrayed by Paul Giamatti, being trapped with one of his students for holidays. The thing is that they have nowhere to go, so the man was just stuck in the situation where he serves as a savior for both of them.
Along with them is an extravagant African American cook Mary, played amazingly by Randolph, and the relationship in their trio is just something so stunningly hilarious yet deeply emotional that there’s nowhere you will not fall in love with all of them.
Through the little though important things the movie shows us that our past is not always responsible for how our future turns out.
And now mark your calendars, because The Holdovers is coming to Prime Video on April 29, and you can finally stream it.
