Ahsoka and Andor Both Highlight Star Wars’ Biggest Problem

Ahsoka shows the exact same results as Andor in the debut episode ratings, losing out to the other Star Wars TV shows.

The long-awaited Ahsoka TV series premiered last week, and judging by the reviews of the first two episodes, Dave Filoni seems to have delivered one of the best Star Wars shows yet, on par with Tony Gilroy's Andor, even if the two are drastically different in tone.

However, things are not as good as they seem for the series, as according to Samba TV, viewership for Ahsoka is lower than for other TV shows set in the franchise.

Just like Andor, which premiered on September 21, 2022 and attracted 1.2 million viewers in the U.S. for its debut episode, Ahsoka's first episode shows the exact same results.

For comparison, Obi-Wan Kenobi attracted twice as many viewers, debuting to 2.4 million viewers on May 27, 2022.

The first episodes of The Mandalorian Season 3 and The Book of Boba Fett also did better, each drawing 1.7 million viewers to their premieres.

Fans believe that the fact that Ahsoka relies heavily on the events of Star Wars Rebels may have contributed to these underwhelming results, as it was considered by many to be the show's biggest problem even before its release.

Not everyone has seen the animated series, so many viewers may be easily confused by a multitude of characters that the show presents as already familiar to fans, and thus barely explains.

Others point out that the track record for Star Wars shows hasn't been great lately, with the aforementioned The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Mandalorian season 3 receiving mixed reviews, leaving some fans disappointed in the franchise.

Another possible explanation is that with a constant supply of new projects set in the Star Wars universe, even the most dedicated fans got a bit burned out and lost interest in new releases.

Ahsoka episode 3 will premiere on August 29, 2023.
