Supernatural is one of those shows that hits the audience right in the feels. And, thanks to the good writers and amazing cast, it does it so expertly, that fans sometimes feel it is an effortless achievement. Which, by extension, has them feeling incredibly deeply right along with their beloved characters.

But what many people do not realise is that performing such emotion-laden scenes can take a real toll on the actors. Yes, they are "acting." But to portray such heavy feelings does take a considerable amount of effort.

Not to mention the strong bond they can form with their characters, which is one of the reasons why actors are able to offer such believable performances.

And this bond comes with a price. Having to put all that personal effort and hard work into your beloved character suffering and feeling some devastating emotions can be brutal.

Supernatural Fans Were Robbed of a Touching Castiel & Crowley Deleted Scene in Season 9

While Supernatural has no shortage of examples of heart-wrenching scenes, there was one in particular that affected Jensen Ackles so deeply that he needed to take time to emotionally and physically recollect himself afterwards.

Sam Winchester's Snooze-Fest in Supernatural Season 10 Made It The Weakest

Fans will recall the tenth episode of season 4, entitled "Heaven and Hell." Here, Dean, portrayed by Jensen Ackles, makes the shocking revelation to his brother, Sam, that he tortured people when he was in Hell. A crushing confession and one that saw Dean in tears of agony over his guilt and having to admit such an atrocity to his brother.

Jensen Ackles has spoken of that exact scene and the effect it had on him. He got into such an emotional state and found he was unable to stop crying even after the scene had wrapped.

Before being able to continue with any further filming that day, he had to go for a walk to calm himself down. He has explained that while his mind was aware he was "only acting," sometimes the body is not so quick to respond once the scene is over.

One thing is for sure. Ackles, and Jared Padalecki who plays Sam, gave so much of themselves to Supernatural. This was not just an acting job for either one of them, even if it may have started that way. They lived and breathed the Winchester brothers for so long, they became a deep part of who they are. And thanks to their devotion and commitment, they have helped to create one of the most incredible shows of all time.
