Here comes a guilty pleasure take on social media’s harmful impact.

Last summer the world saw Talk to Me, a supernatural horror that followed a group of zoomers who find a mysterious hand and realize they can use it to enter other dimensions and contact spirits. The film became the highest-grossing horror ever made by A24, and we know this studio is famous for its remarkable genre’s gems.

The year of 2023 also offered a horror with a synopsis that is quite reminiscent of Talk to Me. Besides, it’s now conquering Prime’s global chart, holding the seventh place in it.

Its plot revolves around Ryan, an awkward teenage outcast, whose sister disappeared months earlier. He believes the reason for it is a social media challenge, based on an old urban legend that attracts recent high school graduates to take part in it.

The point of the ritual is that you need to enter an elevator and then, after using a set of rules and gaining the help of a supernatural creature called the 5th Floor Woman, you enter the other dimension. Thus, in an attempt to find his sister, Ryan joins those who try to repeat the challenge, only to find out it is about to unleash evil into the world.

Cinema lovers can see that such a plot premise is also similar to a bunch of horrors that explore the dark side of social media. These include such genre’s must-watches, as Unfriended (2015), Cam (2018), Host (2020) and Deadstream (2022).

Disappointingly, the movie we’re talking about seems to be less inventive than the aforementioned titles. The film’s story about a horrifying online ritual is criticized for being plain, poorly-acted and even boring, bringing nothing new to the genre, despite its great potential. It is reflected in the movie’s 33% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Indeed, titled Elevator Game, it appears to be a generic horror, but that doesn’t make it not worth a watch. It can serve as a perfect scary choice to switch off your brain.

Thus, check out this horror for an evening chill, as Elevator Game is available on Prime.
