Brooke Shields is back in the tropical setting, but now in a completely new role.

Summary:

  • Netflix ’s top is now blown up by a romcom starring Brooke Shields.
  • It follows a woman, who meets her ex during the preparation for her daughter’s wedding.
  • It’s a light-hearted movie for the fans of Mamma Mia.

Being one of the main stars of the 1980’s, famous for her romantic flicks The Blue Lagoon (1980) and Endless Love (1981), Brooke Shields has recently been celebrated by the audience again, as her romcom is now #1 in Netflix’s Global Chart. Even though it’s panned by critics, it can be a perfect guilty pleasure movie for an evening chill.

Its plot centers on Shields’ Lana, whose daughter surprises her with an unexpected news: she’s getting married. The thing is that the wedding is scheduled not only in a month, but at a resort in Phuket, Thailand. However, it’s not the end of Lana’s shock.

After arriving there for the ceremony, she meets her daughter’s groom and his father, who is none other than Lana’s ex who broke her heart long ago. Together they’ll need to organize the wedding and not destroy the children’s relationship with their past.

This synopsis is reminiscent of many other romcoms all at once, in particular, of course, such wedding movies, as My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002), The Big Wedding (2013) and others. More than that, it can really remind you of Meryl Streep ’s Mamma Mia! (2008), where her character also meets her exes during her daughter’s wedding.

However, it’s not good here that the movie is similar to lots of movies made before, as it uses every trope possible in this subgenre and makes a shameful humor of it. All jokes and characters’ lines sound like they were taken from other sources, rewritten by AI and then put in the script, as well as the whole poorly-built plot development.

It all became the reasons why critics now hate this romcom, gaining one of the lowest possible Rotten Tomatoes scores, 19%. But it clearly doesn’t interfere with the movie prominently dominating in Netflix’s Top 10 after it was aired on May 9.

Titled Mother of the Bride (yes, just like Steve Martin’s Father of the Bride), it can transfer you to the atmosphere of the festive Thailand and its beautiful nature. Besides, if you give it a try, you’ll get the movie perfectly suitable for a post-work chill.

Check out this romcom, as it’s now available for streaming on Netflix.
