The days of urban fantasy series like Once Upon a Time and Supernatural may be over, but we can still enjoy the best of the genre.

There has long been no shortage of fairy tales and mystical adventures on television – the broadcast network is filled with series for every taste and audience. The romantic travails of princesses intersect with dark mystical horror stories, and for every vampire saga there is a Winchester family ready to kill any evil creature.

And yet, among all these titles, one series stood out from the day it premiered – with an unusual approach, a wealth of imagination, charismatic characters, and a promising story.

Grimm, which debuted in 2011, ran for six seasons, and received an impressive 89% from critics and 90% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes, is not just another urban fantasy series. It successfully combines a police procedural with a story about a hunter of evil spirits; each episode is dedicated to the investigation of a crime, but it's not people who are involved but monsters from different fantasy stories.

What is Grimm About?

Grimm is a dark fantasy show in which the main character Nick, a police officer by profession, discovers that the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm describe real monsters. Since these monsters are able to camouflage themselves, most people are unaware of their existence.

But there are those like the main character, who are gifted with the ability to see beneath the magical disguise. And the sacred duty of such people is to keep monsters from going too far. And this is what Nick does at the risk of his life.

Grimm Was an Urban Fantasy Show with Its Own Personality

"Realistic" versions of fairy tale plots are already a boring topic in TV series, but this simple show about an honest detective somehow touched the souls of the viewers. Grimm mocked the canon with style and skill: Little Red Riding Hood disappears into the woods while listening to Sweet Dreams, three bears complain about breaking into the smart house, and a frightened watchmaker does yoga to avoid turning into a monster at full moon.

Detective Nick Burkhardt uncovered his family's secrets and gradually learned to hunt evil spirits; all those attempts to load an ancient crossbow and learn to hold a club looked truly touching.

In addition, Redditors recommend this show to all fans of mystical projects like Supernatural, so if you've seen the adventures of Sam and Dean for the hundredth time, it's just the right time to turn to Grimm.
