‘A Fart in the Wind': Emily Blunt Never Expected The Devil Wears Prada to Succeed
While the movie is now considered almost a cult classic, back in the day, Emily Blunt was convinced that nothing good would come out of it, especially, for her own career.
The Devil Wears Prada was an immediate success when it was released. The movie went on to collect just under $327M worldwide against a budget of $41M, turning insane profits, and while over 60% of its revenue came from the US, it was a hit in all major countries, instantly becoming one of the highest-grossing films of 2006.
Its success didn’t just revolve around money, too, as the critics received The Devil Wears Prada warmly. The movie went on to be nominated for numerous awards, and so did its cast; while it consisted of many stars, for some performers, it was a major breakthrough… Take Emily Blunt, for example — a non-believer who had to believe.
“Nobody had these predictions for the film. All of us thought, ‘For all we know, this film could be a fart in the wind.’ And now everyone's just overjoyed and surprised. You never know with these big films,” Blunt told MTV later on.
The actress claims that pretty much everyone involved was reserved from making bets on the movie. This might appear weird today that we know just how hugely successful The Devil Wears Prada came to be, but back then, no one expected it.
“I knew I had some good one-liners, but I think all of us underestimated the impact this film and our performances would have. Honestly, I didn't realize how big a deal the performance would be at the time. I was having a huge amount of fun with it, overacting my little butt off,” the British actress admitted.
Fortunately for the cast, the movie did phenomenally, and for Emily Blunt specifically, it made an enormous turn in her career. The Devil Wears Prada opened so many doors for the actress, and she made sure to follow through them to become one of the world’s most recognizable and successful actresses as of today.
It’s pretty safe to say that this film did not turn out to be “a fart in the wind.”
