One of the best thrillers in recent years from the creator of Saw and Insidious.

Summary:

  • 2020's The Invisible Man, directed by Saw and Insidious co-creator Leigh Whannell, is a remake of the 1933 Universal horror of the same name.
  • The Invisible Man was originally slated to be part of Universal's Dark Universe, but the failure of The Mummy with Tom Cruise forced the studio to abandon the idea.
  • The thriller follows Cecilia as she secretly escapes her boyfriend’s house, who later commits suicide, but Cecilia continues to feel his presence.
  • The Invisible Man is now available on Apple TV.

Australian Leigh Whannell is still known to the wide audience as the author of Saw, which he created together with James Wan. In 2010, together with the same Wan, he created another profitable horror franchise, Insidious, and even acted as a director of the third installment.

But it wasn't until 2020 that people started talking about Whannell as an original director – that’s when The Invisible Man was released.

The movie still has an impressive 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and can now be watched on Apple TV.

The Invisible Man Was Supposed to Be Included in the Dark Universe

The Invisible Man is the second remake of one of Universal's classic horror films in recent years. The first one was the much criticized (and rightly so) The Mummy with Tom Cruise.

Initially, Universal, following the example of their colleagues at Marvel, wanted to create a separate Dark Universe from the new line of horror films and unite the Mummy, the Invisible Man, Dracula and other characters in it. But after the lukewarm reception of Cruise's film, studio bosses decided to focus on individual projects about anti-heroes.

What is The Invisible Man About?

Under the cover of darkness, Cecilia flees her boyfriend Adrian's house. Now living with a friend, the woman suffers from paranoia when she learns that her ex-boyfriend has committed suicide.

She soon starts to feel nervous, as if Adrian is sneaking up on her unnoticed – after all, it's hard to run from an invisible stalker.

In the nearly one hundred years since the first film adaptation of H.G. Wells' novel of the same name was made in 1933, the world has changed beyond recognition. And the 2020's The Invisible Man remake is an extremely modern movie, both technically and thematically.

At the heart of the plot is a story not so much of persecution as of abuse. The current Invisible Man is not trying to kill Cecilia — he is planning to cut off all her social and personal connections, to surround her with suspicion and panic.

Elisabeth Moss is the Main Strength of the Movie

The biggest advantage of the movie is the casting of Elisabeth Moss in the main role, who seems to know better than anyone else in Hollywood not only how to play constant nervous tension, but also how to convey it directly to the viewer through the screen.

Her Cecilia is not just an oppressed woman, but a heroine willing to change the rules of the patriarchal world for the sake of basic human peace.
