9 Years Later, Anya Taylor-Joy’s 90%-Rated Horror Available on Prime Still Gives Redditors Goosebumps
The Furiosa actress is really furious in this chilling must-watch.
Summary:
- Back in 2015, Anya Taylor-Joy starred in the horror film, following the farmer’s family, who falls victim to a series of horrifying events in New England.
- The actress’s performance was the main key to the movie’s both commercial and critical successes.
- It’s a solid must-watch for the fans of Midsommar.
Anya Taylor-Joy is now one of the most promising actresses of the industry, proving her talent by the performances in the Netflix miniseries The Queen's Gambit (2020), the black comedy The Menu (2022) and the upcoming Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
However, back in 2015, she debuted in a lesser known horror flick, which can be considered one of the best genre’s movies of the 2010s. Reddit still recalls how perfectly she fitted its suspenseful atmosphere, and how it kept them on the edge of their seats.
Set in New England of the 1630s, it focuses on a Puritan family encountering forces of evil reaching their farm. The first tragedy happening to them is the mysterious disappearance of the youngest son Samuel, who was stolen and killed by a witch.
The boy was watched by the oldest daughter Thomasin (Anya Taylor-Joy), and she gets blamed by the whole family for the tragedy, especially by the twins Mercy and Jonas. They accuse their sister of being a witch herself, and it starts to divide the family, facing more and more dangers of the evil creatures.
The movie appears to be a slow-burning folk horror, reminiscent of the female-led Florence Pugh ’s Midsommar (2019) and Jessie Buckley’s Men (2022). It also shows the rage of a woman ending up in a horrifying situation with the mythological creatures and motives involved in the narration.
Here the 17 century’s timeline and the depressing rainy setting add to the film’s growing suspense, which immerses you more and more as the plot progresses and as we see more supernatural events tormenting Thomasin’s family.
Directed by the Lighthouse filmmaker, Robert Eggers, this A24’s horror showcases one of the best Taylor-Joy’s performances, and we shouldn’t forget it was her first role in a full-length feature. It definitely added to the success of this movie, titled The Witch, as it grossed $40 million against a $4 million budget and was highly praised by critics.
“This was my gateway drug into A24,” says Redditor @mat477 in a recent discussion of the movie’s wholesomeness.
Indeed, it can make you revise not only other Taylor-Joy’s movies, but also a number of the worth-watching horror flicks, made by the studio.
Check out The Witch, as this folk horror is available for watching on Prime.
