9 Best TV Shows About Magic You'll Want to Binge Faster Than Witches of East End
Hidden gems, loud hits, and forgotten but worthy projects.
Witches of East End, based on the young adult novel series of the same name by Melissa de la Cruz, became a hit among fans of shows about magic.
Mystical plots, supernatural phenomena and magic potions have captured people's imagination for centuries, and we have chosen nine of the most interesting projects about witches and their difficult fates.
1. Sanctuary: A Witch's Tale, 2024-...
In the British town of Sanctuary, witches have lived peacefully with each other and ordinary people for centuries. Tragedy shatters the idyll when a local teenager dies in an accident at a party. The boy's grieving mother is certain that the witches — Sarah Fenn and her daughter — are to blame.
The accusation splits the community, turning once friendly townspeople into enemies. Mutual suspicions and accusations lead to a terrible end.
This is a detective story about the persecution of witches, based on the novel by V. V. James, which became a bestseller in Britain. Both the book and the series, through mystical elements, discuss the real state of affairs in a patriarchal society, where a woman is in a weak position.
2. The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself, 2022
In an alternate modern Britain, Blood Witches and Fairborn Witches live alongside humans. There is no struggle between ordinary people and witches — the irreconcilable conflict exists only between the latter.
Sixteen-year-old Nathan is unlucky. As the son of members of both warring clans, he is considered unpredictable. The Fairborn leaders fear that the half-breed will follow in the footsteps of his father, the bloodthirsty Blood Witch. Nathan will have to prove that parents do not define their children.
The series is based on the young adult novel series Half Bad by Sally Green, who is often compared to J.K. Rowling. This story does indeed resemble the familiar plot, but unlike Harry Potter, Half Bad drowns in blood. This is not an exciting fairy tale, but a real nightmare with terrible scenes of murder.
3. A Discovery of Witches, 2018-2022
The British fantasy series, based on the trilogy All Souls by Deborah Harkness, was released in 2018 and immediately won the love of the audience. Critics and viewers appreciated the performances of Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode.
Diana Bishop is a candidate of historical sciences and a hereditary witch. One day, while working in the library, she stumbles upon a mysterious magical manuscript, after which the events around her quickly begin to spiral out of control.
To make sense of it all, she enlists the help of a Professor of Biochemistry and vampire named Matthew Clairmont. Together, they must decipher the manuscript and overcome the contradictions and prejudices that separate them.
4. Mayfair Witches, 2023-...
After losing her adoptive mother, neurosurgeon Rowan Fielding learns that she is the heir to the mysterious Mayfair clan of New Orleans. As she delves into the intricate history of the powerful family, she discovers superpowers within herself and tries to control them.
Rowan is a witch, like all the women of the Mayfair dynasty, because she can kill with the power of her mind.
Mayfair Witches was released right after Interview with the Vampire — both projects are based on Anne Rice's novels.
5. Motherland: Fort Salem, 2020-2022
The creators of series about witches and magic usually stick to the traditional canon, but the creator of Motherland: Fort Salem Eliot Laurence took a different path. He sent the witches to an alternate universe where sorceresses serve the good of the motherland.
Three female recruits, who are also witches, have received basic training in combat magic and are ready to fight terrorists and other criminals who threaten the country's security.
The series received high marks and was nominated for a number of prestigious awards. An unusual approach and a unique storyline made the project stand out from other series about witches. If you are looking for something extraordinary, then you will definitely be interested in it.
6. The Secret Circle, 2011-2012
The Secret Circle seemed like a promising project. Hungry for detective stories with magical elements, fans of young adult series and books enjoyed the first episodes. But something went wrong and the show was canceled after the first season. However, this season has proved to be full of events and secrets, and will appeal to fans of the genre.
High school student Cassie arrives in her mother's hometown and learns that some of its residents have a special gift. It turns out that Cassie herself is a hereditary witch. And she is destined to become the missing link in the local coven. Magic, rituals, first love, and deception await the girl in the small town of Chance Harbor.
7. The Magicians, 2015-2020
The series was released in 2015, and despite the lack of big stars in the cast, it was immediately loved by viewers, which ensured five seasons on the air. It is often called Harry Potter and Narnia for adults: there are some scary, bloody and explicit scenes.
Friends Quentin and Julia believe in the existence of magic. Proof of this is the secret university of magic — Brakebills. Quentin manages to enter the first year, and Julia is sent back to the human world, her memory erased. But this is not the end: the world of magic does not let go of those who are loyal to it.
8. Salem, 2014-2017
The small town of Salem is known for the intransigence of its priest — hanging thieves and, of course, witches left and right. Young soldier John goes off to war, and when he returns to Salem, he discovers that power in the town has passed to the priest's wife, John's former lover — Mary.
This power was not gained in the most righteous way, Mary is considered a witch, and John must find out what kind of creature is now hiding under the mask of a beautiful but cruel woman.
The authors claim to have been inspired by the real Salem trials. The result is a dark show, the best part of which is actress Janet Montgomery, the main witch of the series.
9. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, 2018-2020
Perhaps the most famous witch of the early 2000s, besides the Halliwell sisters, was the young Sabrina Spellman. The series Sabrina the Teenage Witch was mainly watched by children. In 2018, a remake appeared on Netflix.
The main character remains the schoolgirl Sabrina Spellman, but now she is interested in much darker magic than in the original. The girl tries to find her place in the world of humans and witches, balancing on the edge of good and evil. Sabrina fights the forces of darkness that threaten not only her, but the entire world.
The character first appeared in the Archie Comics — the same ones that spawned the Riverdale series. With the rights to the characters from both series, the creators of Sabrina delighted viewers with a crossover in the sixth season of Riverdale.
