9 Best Matt Smith Projects if House of the Dragon Just Isn’t Enough
He can be cruel, but he can also be charming, confused, and just a little bit mad.
We have decided to go through the not so long, but rich filmography of one of the biggest TV stars of the moment. Because all fans of House of the Dragon need more Matt Smith ( even if they’re Team Green).
We've chosen nine of the actor's finest roles which show why he turned out to be such a charismatic Daemon Targaryen – or, on the contrary, prove that he can play completely different characters.
1. Womb, 2010
Hungarian director Benedek Fliegauf's sci-fi drama can easily claim the title of the strangest role in Matt Smith's career.
Set in the near future, a woman named Rebecca decides to clone her tragically deceased lover. She carries the child, gives birth and raises him as her own son. But as the boy grows, Rebecca's attitude towards him changes.
Womb is a rather peculiar adaptation of the ancient Greek myth of Oedipus, if the story were told from the perspective of his mother. Overall, the movie has a unique ability to evoke a range of different emotions – from admiration to disgust, but it's hard to argue with one thing – Matt is brilliant in it.
2. The Crown, 2016-2023
In the series about the life of Queen Elizabeth, Matt Smith plays young Prince Philip, the monarch's husband. In a way, this role is a little training for House of the Dragon: before he entered King's Landing, the actor tried on a heavy aristocratic burden.
However, it is hard to see the future Targaryen in Smith's Prince Philip, no matter how hard you try. Smith plays a man who never really wanted power and struggles with the sudden responsibility of being part of the most famous family in the world.
3. Starve Acre, 2023
This summer we are going to see a horror hit that managed to get a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film has only been shown on the festivals so far and will be released in theaters on July 26, but those who have been able to see the project starring two of this year's main TV shows stars – Matt Smith (House of the Dragon) and Morfydd Clark ( The Rings of Power ) – have been amazed.
The movie is set in the town of Starve Acre in rural England in the 1970s, where Richard and Juliette live with their son Owen. As an archaeologist, Richard explores the myths and legends surrounding the ancient oak tree that grows on their land, while Juliette tries to build relationships with the locals.
Soon the parents begin to notice that Owen is behaving weirder and weirder every day, becoming more aggressive. Hoping to find answers, Richard accidentally lets dark, sinister forces into the house that turn the idyllic family life into a real nightmare.
4. Doctor Who, 2005-2022
Before he became Daemon Targaryen, Matt was best known for playing the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor. And the two main characters in his filmography are diametrically opposed.
The Doctor is the ultimate good guy: a sometimes sarcastic but always good-natured alien, always ready to save the world no matter what. He shows nothing close to Daemon's brutal sociopathy on the show, which is a great indicator of Smith's wide range as an actor.
5. Last Night in Soho, 2021
Director Edgar Wright noticed Smith's dark side before many others. In Last Night in Soho, the actor's role has two sides. First, he plays a charming, charismatic music agent who helps the main character become a stage star. Then he plays a nightmarish predator who sells a gullible girl to rich clients.
Thanks to Smith, the rather radical character change goes off without a hitch: the actor is at once brilliant as a dandy and almost a slasher monster-killer, chasing the main character through the creepy London alleys. This duality will later be inherited by Daemon: he, too, can kill his wife for no reason in one scene, and shine with charm and win the hearts of the viewers in another.
6. Mapplethorpe, 2018
In the biographical drama by Ondi Timoner, the actor plays the lead role – the legendary and scandalous photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, who photographed many movie stars in the 70s, but became famous for his provocative erotic photographs.
The movie itself received mixed reviews, but Smith is as good as ever as Robert, despite having to play with an American accent rather than his native one.
7. Official Secrets, 2019
Matt Smith's filmography includes indestructible alien heroes, majestic monarchs and desperate villains. But he rarely plays ordinary people. Official Secrets is one of those exceptions.
Here, Smith appears as the real-life journalist Martin Bright, who in 2003 exposed illegal joint operations by American and British intelligence agencies. The movie has a very strong cast: Matt shares the screen with Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, and Ralph Fiennes. And Matt is not lost among all these stars at all: another argument in favor of his artistic versatility.
8. Charlie Says, 2018
The movie tells the horrific story of Charles Manson's Family from the perspective of three women – the same ones who killed Sharon Tate and her friends on the night of August 8, 1969. Matt Smith plays the infamous leader of the cult.
The movie itself does not tell anything new about the Family, but the actor is amazing in the role of Manson. His natural charisma is combined with a barely concealed psychopathy. It is easy to see how Smith manages to combine the same qualities in House of the Dragon.
9. The Forgiven, 2021
John Michael McDonagh's latest film has flown under the radar. But it's a gripping dramedy about rich white people getting into trouble in the Middle East. Ralph Fiennes' cynical character hits a boy on the road and is forced to go to his home village to bury him according to local custom.
Matt Smith plays one of the hosts of the party the protagonists are heading to. He's silly and arrogant – the perfect symbol of a jaded elite indulging in hedonism, oblivious to the problems around them. The actor reveals an unexpectedly mannered side of himself here, clearly demonstrating that screen wealth suits him well.
