7 Worst Hogwarts Professors, Ranked from Bad to 'What Was Dumbledore Thinking?!'
Some blame Albus Dumbledore for manipulating people; some blame him for keeping others in the dark; some blame him for his past… But the Headmaster's greatest sin was not having a proper HR on his team.
Under Dumbledore's management, Hogwarts has seen probably its worst teachers ever.
While wizards are generally reluctant to employ Muggle techniques, Hogwarts is the best reason why they really shouldn't be: a competent HR specialist would've never allowed these seven people to teach kids!
Let's review the Headmaster's seven worst HR decisions together — and, since some of our choices might appear questionable at first, discuss why these people made it to the list.
Note: This list doesn't include Crouch Jr., Umbridge, or the Carrow siblings as Dumbledore had no way of preventing them from teaching at Hogwarts.
7. Rolanda Hooch
For what's basically a magical PE teacher, Madame Hooch was way, way too passive. Watching her eleven-year-old student fly uncontrollably and do nothing to at least prevent trauma? Check.
Leaving a bunch of other eleven-year-olds who don't know how to fly alone with brooms for half an hour? Check. Still not managing to teach most students to fly properly? Check.
Totally incompetent.
6. Cuthbert Binns
Who thought it was a nice idea to let a monotonous ghost who doesn't even realize he's dead teach history in a world with such tense relationships between magical species?
Apart from the fact that everyone was falling asleep during his lectures, Binns also ensured none of the students knew how to behave with, say, goblins.
Boring and incompetent.
5. Sybill Trelawney
Oh boy, where do we even start?.. Trelawney is a fraud that doesn't possess the gift she claimed to possess that was hired to teach a technique that can't be taught.
Even if we ignore her problems with alcohol, this is a massive "no". It wasn't really necessary to let this woman "teach" children to keep her safe, was it, Albus?
Utterly, utterly incompetent.
4. Rubeus Hagrid
"How dare you include the friendly old groundskeeper into this list?!", you may be thinking.
We have a response to that: Hagrid was alright as a groundskeeper, but making him a teacher was a massive mistake. Hagrid was constantly endangering kids, didn't follow any program, and had no real clue how to teach his subject.
Sorry, but he's also incompetent.
3. Severus Snape
What could possibly go wrong if you let an ex-Death Eater with massive ego and attitude issues become Head of the House and a Professor?
Severus Snape was incredibly biased, hated kids, and used his power to literally abuse them in various ways. And he didn't even want to teach the subject he was appointed to!
"Who let him near children"-level incompetent.
2. Gilderoy Lockhart
How did a man as sharp as Albus Dumbledore wake up one day and think to himself:
"Let's invite an arrogant, dumb, and egocentric showman to teach kids self-defense without doing any background check!"?
We don't have to explain why Lockhart was a terrible teacher material: every scene with him proves it enough.
Dumb, incompetent, and dangerous.
1. Quirinus Quirrell
An HR would've likely had even fewer issues with Quirrell than Dumbledore must have. His one obvious flaw was stuttering which is fine in itself but not for a teacher.
But Dumbledore, of all people, a great wizard who (as we saw later) could literally sense Dark magic, failed to realize there was something wrong with the guy who had a literal Dark Lord peeking out of the back of his head?..
Competent, for once… But Merlin's beard, how did he even make it past Dumbledore?
