7 Rom-Coms of Last 25 Years That Define the Genre Despite Low Ratings

Cinema industry is one of the fastest growing ones. Every month production companies create films that are becoming tougher to top. Powerful writings,amazing visuals, brilliant acting – these are all the parts of what turns a regular movie into a great one.

And while different genres attract different audiences, we know for sure that there’s arguably a single person in the world who in the moment of despair hasn't turned to the magic of a light-hearted rom-com.

And while you know and love all the movies from the list below, their ratings are surprisingly low. Are people just ashamed to confess their love to these movies then?

1. 50 First Dates (2004)

The first movie that came to mind is not the most obvious choice to start the list, but we have some reasons for doing so. For one, it stars Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, the two actors who have made a fortune starring in romantic comedies.

The light-hearted movie revolves around their characters falling in love and eventually starting a family. But before all that happens, we find out that Lucy suffers from a disease and can't remember her life from a certain point on. Every day she wakes up thinking it's a certain day.

So Sandler's character Henry makes it his life's mission to brighten the girl's life and spend the rest of it with her, turning every day into a first date.

2. Runaway Bride (1999)

We never imagined that this legendary romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere would be so underrated, but here we are. The story revolves around a journalist named Ike Graham who travels from New York to a small town called Maryland to cover a story about a young woman who has left three fiances at the altar.

The woman is Maggie Carpenter, and she believes she has her reasons, but the whole town is ready to dig up dirt on her and tell Ike every little detail they know.

However, as the genre suggests, these two are bound to end up together, and you will never be happier when they confess their feelings to each other.

3. What Women Want (2000)

Another iconic movie that delves deep into the psychology between the relationship between men and women. At the center of the story is an advertising executive Nick Marshall, who is as alpha as a man can be, never paying enough attention to the needs of his female friends…

But one day he wakes up after an accident and is given a magic skill to hear whatever women think. But is it a gift or a punishment for him though?

4. Bad Teacher (2011)

Who doesn't love an over-the-top, ridiculous story with a sweet finale where the terrible main character is redeemed after being a disgrace to all of humanity? We know we do!

Bad Teacher is a story exactly like that, as it follows a gold digger Elizabeth Halsey, brilliantly played by Cameron Diaz, becoming a better version of herself with the help of several people she meets on her journey.

5. Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)

A relatively new movie that we know no one will admit enjoying, but which will be still watched on a lonely night with the lights off. Fifty Shades of Grey is based on an E. L. James' novel and features Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan as main characters Anastasia and Christian.

The movie has become the subject of so many memes over the years that it's hard to imagine anyone out there not knowing that it's a story about a young literature student who falls in love with a flawed and deeply troubled billionaire with specific sexual preferences.

6. Love And Other Drugs (2010)

Rotten Tomatoes: 49%

Whenever you see Anne Hathaway 's name in the cast of a movie, you know it's almost always a rom-com. However, in this movie she plays the part of a hard-to-get Maggie: especially when it comes to serious relationships and (oh God!) marriage.

But when he meets another free spirit in the face of Jamie, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, they both find themselves under the influence of the ultimate drug: love.

7. Just Go With It (2011)

We decided to leave this Adam Sendler and Jennifer Aniston movie until the end of the list, but we really feel that this movie deserves more than a 19% score out of pity. The 2011 movie is a fun comedy about how we don't see the happiness right in front of us and fail to appreciate the good things that make our lives easier.
