The entertainment industry is, first and foremost, an industry, and entertainment comes second, so a lot of shows that had promising plots but performed badly ended up canceled way too soon.

We're going to mourn 7 of them here, as they were axed right after the first season.

Capitalism dulls creativity, and these shows prove that. Ratings are everything: they generate the revenue and the buzz in the media, and without them, the network can't have enough profits. For the majority of these shows the reason for poor ratings was that the plots were too convoluted for the general audience, and they were deemed too niche.

They couldn't generate enough views, despite some of them having star-studded casts and cool imagery: people didn't want to get into the stories like that. Some of these shows were released in the wrong era: Kings or My So-Called Life could've been quite relevant if they were streaming nowadays.

But we still have these shows online and in the archives, and, thankfully, most of them reached at least a semblance of conclusion at the end of their only season. Otherwise it would've been really sad to know that we won't ever get a continuation.
