7 Biggest Movies Coming to Netflix This Week: January 15th to 21st, 2024
There are more and more great movies on Netflix. Well, not counting 2019's Cats.
This week is going to be a real feast for Netflix subscribers. Let's take a look at what movies are being added to the service's library.
7. Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017)
Release date (Netflix): January 15
This movie follows a man imprisoned for drug trafficking whose pregnant wife is kidnapped by the criminals he worked with. From behind bars, he must do whatever it takes to protect his wife and unborn child while using the most brutal methods to wipe out the gang members in prison. Vaughn delivers one of the best performances of his career, playing a man willing to fight back against corrupt officials and the thugs who take advantage of him.
6. Cats (2019)
Release date (Netflix): January 16
Okay, so you're probably wondering why Cats is even on this list. Well, we're still having horrible dreams about its CGI. But for all its visual misdirection, the movie has an incredibly talented cast that's still a joy to watch, even with the ghoulish character design. And while 2019's Cats will never compare to the original show, there's still something there. Taylor Swift 's talent, at least.
5. Queen Bees (2021)
Release date (Netflix): January 17
While not all critics liked Michael Lembeck and Donald Martin's film, audiences praised it for its warm, feel-good story that is not aimed at Gen Z or even Millennials: It's high time to remember that no age, even the golden years, is a barrier to enjoying life. The story follows Helen (Ellen Burstyn), a woman in her senior years who is forced to move into a retirement community —except the residents have no intention of retiring, as they are living life to the fullest.
4. Cowboys & Aliens (2011)
Release date (Netflix): January 18
Jon Favreau's Cowboys & Aliens is one of the most ridiculous movies of the last decade, but its problem is more that it doesn't realize it, trying to be extremely serious rather than silly despite the crazy stuff going on in it. Still, 13 years later, Cowboys & Aliens stands as a fun ride, thanks to some fairly impressive CGI and the acting of Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig.
3. The Good Shepherd (2006)
Release date (Netflix): January 18
In 2006, Robert De Niro delivered a spy thriller that, despite its subject matter, is a deep character study that explores how a personal biography full of espionage, betrayal, and personal drama can affect the entire intelligence community. The plot centers on Edward Wilson, played by Matt Damon, who was based on an actual historical figure - CIA counterintelligence chief James Jesus Angleton.
2. The Legend of Tarzan (2016)
Release date (Netflix): January 18
David Yates' attempt to bring a beloved book character to the big screen was far from successful, despite a rather original vision: to tell the story of Tarzan, already accustomed to human society, who decides to return to Africa and even prevent Belgian colonialism and slavery. But unfortunately, in 2023, the idea of a white savior doesn't look too good, so we are left to admire Alexander Skarsgård's torn torso.
1. Dumb Money (2023)
Release date (Netflix): January 21
Finally joining the streaming service's library is a biographical comedy-drama written by Craig Gillespie, based on Ben Mezrih's book The Antisocial Network, and featuring an all-star cast including Paul Dano, Pete Davidson, America Ferrera, Sebastian Stan, Nick Offerman, Anthony Ramos, Seth Rogen, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Shailene Woodley. The film follows how ordinary netizens put on a show for all of Wall Street, turning GameStop into one of the craziest phenomena on the stock market.
