A French film featuring a cameo appearance by former Manchester United footballer Eric Cantona. Special ops agent Adam Franco (Alban Lenoir) infiltrates an organised crime group as part of a plot to eliminate the man suspected of being behind a terrorist attack in Paris.

As he rises through the ranks of the gang, he befriends the boss's son. When push comes to shove, his loyalty and morals are put to the test.

3. The Black Book

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 65%

When his son is wrongly convicted of kidnap and murder, Paul Edima must take on his old crime boss in order to clear his name. But as he delves deeper into why his son Damilola was framed for the crime, he uncovers a world of corruption that looks set to make his task even harder than he had imagined.

4. Soulcatcher

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 37%

This movie may not have impressed the Rotten Tomatoes viewers, but it has an interesting premise. A military contractor is handed the task of locating and seizing a weapon designed to turn people into ruthless killers.

When his brother falls victim to it, his main motivator becomes revenge. If you like bar brawls in a movie, don't rule it out until you've given it a go.

5. Mother's Day

A mother's love is not something you want to test. A former special agent, Nina has spent the last 18 years in hiding, presumed dead. As a result, she's never met her son. But when he's kidnapped, she sets out to rescue him. But Nina is more than just a mother on a mission. She's a trained killer. And she'll stop at nothing to protect her boy.

There's plenty of action, and if martial arts is your thing, this is a movie you might enjoy.

6. Codename: Tiranga

It's fair to say that opinion is split on this film. Most critics don't like it, and it's been criticised for poor acting and bad action scenes. But there are some fans who praise Codename: Tiranga for its portrayal of a strong female lead – something many say is lacking in the Hindi film industry.

Ultimately, the only way to make a judgement is to watch the film. The plot revolves around Durga Devi Singh / Ismat, who is on a covert mission in the Middle East. Gathering information for the Indian authorities, Durga is committed to serving the national interest. But then there's the small matter of her falling in love with the wrong man.

Yes, the dilemma she faces is a bit of a cliché. But this is first and foremost an action film. And there is something to be said for producers committed to increasing the number of female protagonists in movies.
