6 Movie Sequels You Had No Idea About (Because They Suck)
What do you mean there is a second part of the Mean Girls story?
Apparently, the world of cinema is full of lesser-known sequels to beloved films that may have flown under your radar.
Here are some surprisingly shocking movie sequels you probably didn't know existed.
1. American Psycho (2000) — American Psycho 2 (2002)
The dark comedy sequel takes an unexpected turn by not just writing off the original film's serial killer, Patrick Bateman, but eliminating him. The replacement character, portrayed by Mila Kunis, doesn't have the same impact, and the attempt to capitalize on Christian Bale 's movie success left the sequel in the shadows.
2. Mean Girls (2004) — Mean Girls 2 (2011)
The film echoed the first Mean Girls by depicting a student's experience at North Shore High School and her interaction with the new Plastics clique, but it seems that school is the only thing these two movies have in common. Mean Girls 2 could almost stand on its own as a movie, but its title seems misplaced as the characters lack the same traits as their predecessors.
3. Bambi (1942) — Bambi 2 (2006)
Released 64 years after the original animated drama, Bambi 2 reunites the young deer with his father. Despite beautiful animation and a heartwarming story, the sequel falls short of the original and has been described by critics as mildly amusing but unremarkable.
4. Donnie Darko (2001) — S. Darko: A Donnie Darko Tale (2009)
Set 7 years after the breakthrough of the first movie, the sequel has nothing of the original gem. While Richard Kelly's psychological thriller was praised for its originality and intelligence, the sequel received negative reviews from both critics and audiences.
5. Legally Blonde (2001) — Legally Blondes (2009)
Released directly to DVD and more of a spin-off than a true sequel, this movie briefly references the previous Legally Blonde films. Criticized for the lackluster portrayal of the main characters and for the film's difficulty in justifying its reason for being, Legally Blondes was simply ignored by fans of the original film.
6. The Blair Witch Project (1999) — Book Of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (2000)
The first part of the legendary supernatural horror film revolutionized the found footage horror genre back in 1999. The sequel, however, took a different approach, blurring the lines between fiction and reality as it explores the impact of the first film on its characters and the real world. The film turned out to be so bad it received only a 14% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes from over 100 critical reviews.
