The actor’s fans will be able to see his performance in quite a controversial feature.

Summary:

  • Back in 2019, the Oppenheimer star joined the cast of a spy action movie, which became a poorly received box office bomb.
  • It follows a cunning special agent who is pretending to be a model.

The world is still not over Cillian Murphy ’s once-in-a-lifetime performance in Christopher Nolan ’s Oppenheimer, as his old movies are entering streaming platforms’ charts periodically. Jumping on this hype train, Netflix is going to add the 2019 controversial movie, which assembles the Internet’s favorite actor in a supporting role.

The plot of this spy action feature revolves around a young Russian girl, who gets recruited as a field operative by a KGB agent for five years of service, which can fix her horrifying life situation. She is then moving to Paris and assumes the identity of a model, and during her photoshoots and fashion shows she assassinates her targets.

However, her relatively stable position gets complicated when she is found by the CIA executive Leonard Miller, portrayed by Murphy, who offers her to be a double-agent, to which she agrees in her ambition to shoot her way out of the KGB and to become free.

This synopsis may remind you of such movies as Atomic Blonde (2017) and Red Sparrow (2018), where its main heroines also use their elegance and sexuality to confuse their targets to eventually kill them. However, they both became both critical and commercial successes, while Murphy’s movie grossed only $31 million against a $30 million budget.

More than that, such a plot line is reminiscent of Luc Besson’s La Femme Nikita, which, back in 1990, became a hugely acclaimed hit, marking the beginning of the new era of spy movies, with the topic of female empowerment being mainly involved.

It comes as a surprise that the accomplished filmmaker literally repeated the plot of his old smash hit, but did it in a much worse way. Titled Anna, after the name of the main heroine, the given film received a shameful 33% of critical acclaim on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite a large amount of reasonable criticism, the movie still has something great to offer. This includes spectacular choreography of fighting sequences, the choice of soundtrack and, undoubtedly, the assembled cast. Apart from Murphy, the movie stars Helen Mirren, Luke Evans and the amazing real-life model Sasha Luss as Anna.

Check out whether this feature deserves such a low rating, as it will be available on Netflix on April 16.
