Now there are some real gut punches.

The Simpsons is arguably the most popular animated series on TV. Matt Groening's masterpiece has been on the air for more than 30 years and is currently in season 35.

Over the years, the show has told many stories, mostly funny, but sometimes shockingly true to life and even predictive of the future. But there have also been times when The Simpsons writers almost made us cry at the end of an episode.

Here are some of the most emotional ones the show has ever had.

1. When Maggie Helped Homer Survive At Work

Most of the time, it seems like Homer doesn't care about his own family at all, but that's just what he keeps on the surface. The show has proven many times that Homer actually loves them more than anything in the world. In the episode And Maggie Makes Three, we learn that she was accidentally conceived after Homer quit the job he hated and found his dream job at the bowling alley.

But Marge's pregnancy forced him to go back to the power plant, and to make his time there a little more bearable, he simply collected all of Maggie's pictures, made a poster out of them, and hung it on the wall at work to motivate him. That's how important his family is to him.

2. Maggie’s First Word

Another heartfelt scene involving Maggie happened in the season 4 episode called Lisa's First Word. Despite the title, the story also tells us about Maggie's first word. It was revealed that Lisa said "Bart" before anything else, and that eventually helped them bond. Later, they decided to call their father by his name instead of actually calling him "Dad".

But unlike those two, Maggie, who is silent most of the time on the show, actually called Homer "Daddy" once. In fact, it was her first word, and she said it after Homer gave up trying to get her to talk and left the room. If only he had stayed there to hear her...

3. Twice Betrayed By His Own Mother

The episode Mother Simpson tells us a bit of Homer's tragic backstory, revealing why his mother left him when he was a child. Turns out she was hiding all those years he thought she was dead because her activist group attacked Mr. Burns' lab and was wanted.

After Homer faked his own death for some bizarre reason, she showed up and they finally got to spend some time together, only to be separated again. She is eventually spotted by Mr. Burns and is forced to leave again, leaving Homer completely devastated and heartbroken.

4. Homer and Marge’s Love Story

Season 2, episode 12 gives us some flashbacks of how the most iconic cartoon couple met and decided to become a family, and trust us, their story is so romantic you wouldn't believe it was The Simpsons we were talking about.

As it turns out, Homer fell in love with Marge the first time he saw her while they were still in high school, but was too shy to ask her out and got help from Artie Ziff, only to end up with the guy stealing his love interest.

In the end, Marge realized that Artie was not a good person. It was then that Homer confessed to her he was in love and promised they would never be apart from that night on. And they never were...

5. When Lisa Was Sad and Nobody Understood Her

The episode titled Moaning Lisa took place in season 1 and was the first time we saw Lisa in the blue. Throughout the episode, she was feeling bad and couldn't understand what the point of her existence was. She tried to talk to Homer, but of course he didn't understand her (even though he meant well).

Even Marge gave her some terrible advice her mother once gave her: to put on a smile and push the bad feelings to the ground. Finally, near the end of the episode, Marge realized that was a bad thing to say to her daughter and told her that it was okay to feel sad and that she would always support her. And that was when Lisa finally felt like smiling.
