Can the new adaptation be an adequate successor to the cult anime?

Adapting anime for the small screen is a very difficult task. It is practically impossible to accurately recreate the disproportionately drawn characters, which makes it difficult for fans of the original to feel the spirit of the story.

Recently, Netflix finally released the first teaser for the upcoming One Piece live-action show. However, fans are not very enthusiastic about the adaptation.

Cult Status Of The Anime

One Piece is one of the most legendary anime of all time. It was a very bold move for Netflix to go for the live-action adaptation, because the bar is really high. And even though Netflix wants to hit the jackpot, the chances of getting a huge amount of devastating reviews are only increasing.

Previous Adaptations That Failed

It is impossible to transfer fantasy anime stories to the live-action adaptation in a way that fans can forget about the excellent original for even a minute. Besides, fans have real reason to be concerned: Cowboy Bebop’s live-action adaptation disappointed viewers, to say the least, and now they're even more wary of new Netflix's attempt.

Controversial Cast

Netflix tried to find the most authentic actors for the main roles, but there will always be dissatisfied viewers. Someone did not like Luffy's comical behavior, someone was not enthusiastic about the insufficiently brutal Zoro, and others resented Nami's non-canonical beauty.

CGI Should Be Immaculate

Although One Piece is primarily about pirates, there are also many unrealistic fantasy details and creatures that do not look very good in live-action. In order to reproduce all these elements on a small screen in a way that looks decent, the CGI quality has to be very high, which in turn increases the production costs significantly.

Original Story Is Too Long

Currently, the One Piece anime has more than a thousand episodes that are still being released. There is no way that Netflix can transfer the whole story to the screen. Therefore, the logical question is how did the writers and directors decide to shorten the story, and which events were considered worthy for the series, and which ones they decided to remove.
