5 Progressively Freaky Movies That Started Out Perfectly Normal
When you thought they were messing with your head, and they really were.
Watching movies can be a boring process for the real cinemaholics, who most of the time can predict what's going to happen in another scene. But sometimes even those who consider themselves true movie connoisseurs start pulling their hair out when they see something weird happening on the screen.
The most shocking twists are the ones we do not suspect at all. When there is no foreshadowing of any kind and you just follow the plot. However, this blind following takes you to the most unexpected places and that's what makes your head spin.
Well, if you like that feeling, then check out these ten movies that started out normal but turned into a total freak show.
1. Sorry To Bother You
Set in an alternate present day version of Oakland, the film follows Cassius Green, a young black telemarketer who discovers a secret to success in his field. Green adopts a white accent and begins to climb the corporate ladder, only to face a moral dilemma later on.
However, only the first part of the movie is a satire of corporate culture. In the middle of the movie, the audience learns a disturbing detail that turns the story into a sci-fi nightmare.
2. Beau Is Afraid
This 2023 movie starring Joaquin Phoenix caused a lot of controversy even before its release. But after the film was in theaters, the "what the hell was that" conversations took over the Internet. There’s no words to describe it, you just have to watch it.
“It felt like a stressful bad acid trip panic attack, it felt weird for the sake of weird, and the CGI monster was a terrible choice. Bloated mess is accurate,” one Redditor said.
3. Men
Men is a British folk horror movie written and directed by Alex Garland. It stars Jessie Buckley as a widow who goes on vacation to a country village, but gets disturbed and tormented by the strange men in the village, all played by Rory Kinnear.
The movie was so bizarre its viewers can hardly understand what on earth is even going on. The ending doesn’t help, only adding a little more insanity to the plot.
4. Mother!
The 2017 psychological horror film was written and directed by Darren Aronofsky. And believe us when we say that watching it is a real journey... You start out thinking you know exactly where the movie is going. Then Aronofsky spends the last hour showing you, over and over again, exactly how wrong you were.
“I just saw Mother! last weekend, and... wow. It had a genuine dream-like quality to it that I really loved, like one of those dreams that keeps getting weirder and weirder but you accept it because you're in dream logic,” Redditor ComplexityArtifice said.
5. Everything Everywhere All At Once
It's impossible to pin this independent film down to one genre, as it's actually a mix of several, with the most obvious elements being dramedy and surreal sci-fi. The movie starts with a lady doing her taxes, and ends with an acid-induced fever dream of insanity.
