Although these five may seem like your typical "happy endings," they are actually quite dark when you think about them.

People love to see things end on a positive note, which is why most movies have happy endings, even if their characters have to go through hell to get there.

However, in rare cases, it feels like the filmmakers have hidden another, much darker ending under several layers of sunshine and rainbows, intentionally or not.

So here are five seemingly happy endings that turn out to be much less positive upon closer inspection.

Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)

After Eggsy kills Valentine and manages to disable the signal that turns people into raging, violent psychos, it seems like disaster has been averted.

However, the signal, which affects its victims almost instantly, was active for a short period of time, which undoubtedly led to widespread casualties.

Worst of all, most of the victims were likely children, as evidenced by the scene where Eggsy's mother nearly kills his half-sister.

Fight Club (1999)

Although David Fincher's adaptation changed the ending of Chuck Palahniuk's original novel to a more optimistic one, it is still not as positive as it seems.

Yes, the narrator managed to get rid of his destructive alter ego and patch things up with Marla, but he'll still take full legal responsibility for Tyler's actions, since he can't even plead insanity anymore.

Whiplash (2014)

The cathartic finale of Whiplash suggested that Andrew Neiman and Terence Fletcher had finally reconciled, and that the latter's cruel methods had indeed been worth it.

However, the film's director, Damien Chazelle, revealed in one of the interviews that this peace wouldn't last, as Neiman's psyche was completely broken, leading him to die of a drug overdose in his thirties.

Get Out (2017)

After finally escaping the grasp of the Armitage family and dealing with them for good, Chris Washington drives off into the night with his friend.

But with a house full of corpses, and considering how insane the Armitages' plan to steal the bodies of black people actually sounds, Chris is definitely facing if not jail, then a very intense trial and will have to work extra hard to prove his innocence.

Elysium (2013)

Thanks to Max Da Costa's brave sacrifice, everyone on Earth becomes a citizen of Elysium, giving them access to life-saving medical technology.

But considering that Earth is already massively overpopulated at the beginning of the movie, such miraculous health care will only make things worse, leading to more pain, violence and misery.
